Good Day everyone,

Has anyone ever seen a set of 180 degree exhaust headers for AMC V-8's?

Just curious if they were ever made.

Thanks,

Armand

Peach State AMO is going to host a 2007 Southeast Regional in Atlanta
once again!

First weekend of October, at the same Hilton hotel that hosted the 2005
AMO National show in Norcross, GA.

That would be correct for the five speed -- 4.0L with the BA 10/5 used
a 3.08 and tall tires. I had a Comanche like that -- fifth was no good
except on the highway at higher speeds, and even then it felt weak. It
really needed just a little more gear --3.23 or 3.31 would have felt
really good! I remember lots of 4-5-4 shifting in hilly terrain, and
not mountains like you have!

Kanter is probably the most cost effective. Egge Machine, and Rambler
vendors like Blaser's and Galvin's will probably be a little more, but
I'd try the AMC vendors first. If not much more I'd use them anyway.

All the 196 OHV or L-head valves should be the same -- RESPECTIVELY.
Can't mix OHV and L-head. If the length, diameter, and keepers match,
they fit. You can actually fudge on the length a little due to the
adjustable rockers, but I'd say no more than about +/- 0.05". That's a
lot, actually, but hard to see that much. Nothing wron g with using
another make valve that fits, but I doubt there is anyting with a valve
head that fits that is the right length and diameter. You'd need guide
work at the least.

evolve over the life of the 196 OHV engine?

I'm just about finished parting out a 77 Hornet AMX.

Still have:

driver's side rear quarter complete, removed at spot
welds (not easy, but a good learning project).

Fuel tank and straps and fuel sender
Fuel filler assembly and door
Rear interior plastic and headliner (black)
Rear seat (great condition)
Gas lift struts for hatch
Hatch with glass
Targa band (must be picked up)
Rear bumper
All four gas bumper shock absorbers
Front doors, complete except for door panels
All glass (tinted)
Hood with so-so Hornet medallion
Rear bumper filler pieces.

I can cut the floors, but also have other Hornet sedan
floorpans for sale too.

Will not ship the headliner, targa band, or rear
hatch.
Everything else can be packaged and shipped.

Also have 76 Hornet fenders (perfect)
76 Hornet Grille and front bumper filler.
76 Hornet hood.

Reasonable prices.

I see by the paint # it was originaly frost white. :)

According to the 61 American manual the 6x15 tires turned 804 revs per mile.
Your new tires should be similar. 175/80 or 185/75 or 195/70 are close.

Yes it was white from the factory. The previous painter didn't go to
great pains to cover all the white.

Thanks for the tire size. That's what I've been after. The tire
conversion chart allowed me to get pretty close, and I figured on
finding 175/80, so this confirms it.

Thanks!
Mike

Well, I got it home from NYC with no problems at all! The exhaust is kind of lud due to some leaks, but it drove fine. Vacuum seems to be a little low, so I may have a vacuum leak in the manifold. It has power brakes, but sure doesn't feel like it! The previous owner (PO) stated that he put metallic pads on and that it stopped much better with standard pads. That's a cheap swap, might have to find out! He also told me that only one of the front calipers was bled recently due to a broke off bleeder screw. A rear tire is out of balance or has a slipped belt, but the PO told me about that. Gets a vibration in it around 55 but not bad now. It started a little unsettling, but as I drove (couldn't go over 55 while near the city anyway) it got a bit better. I ended up driving at 65 or so most of the way home with just a bit of vibration -- not enough to be anooying or uncomfortable. The exhaust system is BADLY rusted -- could be original! It's definitely leaking some, sounds about !

old tractor! Planning on replacing it soon -- will look on-line and see if I can buy a head pipe so I don't have to replace the cat.

He'd been using it to snow plow with, and boy does it show! Lots of flakey surface rust on the front frame, and bolts that were difficult to get off. Nothing you northerners aren't accustomed to, but I'm sure not!! One main bolt holding the plow frame on must be bent -- couldn't drive it out with a 2# shop hammer! It's a 1/2" bolt. I'll get a local shop to blow the head off with a torch. I found some braces welded on the front crossmember that will need to be cut off anyway. Now I know why the PO didn't take the frame off, just the pump, hydraulics, and blade! I let him keep the plow in exchange for an aluminum cap. Probably won't use that much either, but can use it more than a snow plow in S.C.! I'm driving the truck down in a couple weeks then parking it until I move there. Wanted a Jeep, and this one looked pretty good. It has some rust here and there over the body, but seems to be typical J-truck stuff. I'll use it a year or two then start patching here and there as lon!

erything seems to be okay. Should -- the trans (nice "snap" in every gear!) and transfer case were rebuilt over the last 3-4 years.

The four speed (T-176) acts more like a three speed with OD with the stock 2.73 gears. No point in using fourth unless you're traveling over 45-50. With a load there will be lots of 3-4-3 shifting. Not a problem though, first seems to be low enough for a light load, and there's low range in the transfer case if not. IIRC it can be shifted from low to high on the fly with no problems. Anyone know for sure (Jim B?)

Sounds like you got a good deal on a fairly decent truck all things considered!
On the exhaust, if at all possible I'd recomend taking a few days to think over what you would really want to end up with in the long term.
No need to redo things over again later if you can avoid it just causes extra work.
I'd do a new generic high flow cat and 2 1/4" exhaust and be done with it!
That cat is likely 20+ years old, unlikely it is functioning properly or flowing well anymore. Generic cats are cheap if you shop around.
At least you got the 2.79 gears! My cousin got like 22? gears! It wouldn't backup out of his drivweway in high range. When he towed his horses up the hill he had to stop and do the lowrange thing then too. If you plan on using it for a tow rig you will probably be wanting to eventually go a little steeper in the gear ratio.
Have fun with your new truck!

Well, I'm moving back to SC just in time then! Should be able to
attend, but not making any promises. Atlanta is only four hours away,
so should be able to get up early in the morning and drive up. Depends
on the house building/remodeling schedule! But I'm planning on
appearing...
