What I like about the idea is a non welding person could install and set these up.
Drill for the pin bolt then get them welded anywhere anytime. No towing, no sweat.
The question that has not bee asked is what size rotors are these things designed for?!!! I never looked, I'll have to checkout what the stock car racers use.

No. Never seen it, nor heard of it ever on an XJ. Not on the 8.25 or the D35.

jim's right. if you're lucky the tranny will bolt to your bellhousing
but that's as far as you'll get.

i know of only one tranny in the last 40 years that has a separate
tailshaft, the gm saginaw 3sp/4sp. anything else, you have to change
the mainshaft in 4wd-2wd conversion.

what year is your car? nearly all '75-later amcs used a ford
toploader 3sp, common on fords from the mid '60s through the '70s.
also if you have a floor shifter, a short shaft [most common] 4sp
toploader is a straight swap, no driveline changes.

i'm amazed you could trash a toploader. they're pretty tough.

Hi, Guys:

I dropped off a head to be rebuilt at the local Napa machine shop. They have done excellent work for me before on a set of IH 304 heads and a set of Stude 289 heads.

Anyway, I got a call back that they cannot find valves or other components. If find this a bit odd . . . I have had Rambler 196 heads rebuilt before and have never heard of a problem finding parts, but of course haven't used this place.

I looked at Kanter, and they want $15/valve, which in valves alone will run me $180, and that doesn't include guides or seals.

My question is: other than Kanter, is there a "one stop" place to buy a complete set for rebuilding a head? Or do I have to buy individual component pieces?

My other question is: I have a collection of NOS engine parts, so I dug through boxes of valves. I have various valves for 196 heads, but none that are specifically for a 1960 head. How much did the heads evolve over the life of the 196 OHV engine?

- Justin

there's egge machine co, which is probably where kanter is getting
their parts, but they might not be much cheaper.

instead): america must do better. america can die like amc did.

[lower] court case closed.

But then, like AMC itself, AMC fans may be (are) "odd" as well.

Some of them keep AMC alive; if they didn't, AMC can die again.

http://www.amcforums.com/cgi/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1161206636

http://www.planethoustonamx.com/

And AMC must do better.

Even Dumler sees that.

Ding, dong, the strakes are gone: looks a little like a Subaru.

http://www.jalopnik.com/photogallery/SEMASebring/484813

Makes me think of so many things; don't have time to type them.

Ford can put bending lights --- halogen, not xenon, but whaddya want for Golf money --- on its European Focus (which is one generation newer than ours), but we get over-inflated Audi knock-offs with few guts and 13-mpg trucks. The ancient Crown Vic/Grand Marquis are still built. 1978-2007 versus 1967-1978? AMC "odd"? Three new Ford compacts to debut by 2010; Asia will put a dozen new B-cars on US roads by then: we must do better.

Ford of Japan can sell the world's second-fastest FWD car (263hp with 0-60 in 5.9) for $23,000 (good luck getting one of the 5,000 [of 12,000] coming here for that): it's practical (it's a 5d HB), it's attractive (in a Scion tC way [better looking than Cobalt SS], and it's reliable (in a Toyota/Honda vein), but Ford of America can't afford to put the [Yamaha-designed] V-8 in its Lincoln flagship (which looks like a twin to a Lexus LS); if Hudson couldn't sell a mid-priced car without a V-8 in the '50s, how can Ford sell a luxury car with a V-6 50 years later? (Even if a V-6 can do the job --- as Nissan has taught the world for a decade or so...) It can't (And don't say "Jaguar" --- its 32v DOHC V-8 is too expensive --- and it, too, is a decade old.)

Even Cadillac sees that.

So GM is improving (have you seen the '08 Malibu?); Chrysler is trying but it still builds too much junk. Hornet will be a hit, but it'll be imported. Imperial will be a big hit, but it will still be a hideous-looking thing. And it will have a half-life, like the hideous-looking 300C: Mazda has not had to incentive-sell its 3 in three-years of life; Chrysler has watched its 300C actual sale prices fall and fall and fall.

China is coming: from Chery (remember Nissan Cherry: wasn't it a joke?), to Shamash, to XS200 ($30k lithium luxury), to ZX40 ($15k box here now.)

http://www.milesautomotive.com/

Toyota now puts LED headlamps on LS600 (and LED license-plate lamps on lesser Lexii); Cadillac took forever to put HIDs on its STS "flagship.

But Lexus can't put precrash warning, obstacle detection, and adaptive cruise control on US cars. We have too many lawyers, politicians, and judges.

America must do better.

A: A couple things I suggest for FSJ owners. Carry some wire (I suggest 14
gauge) and make an extra ground to the frame from the battery negative and
jumper from the alternator main terminal to the battery +. This will 90%
likely avoid any wiring troubles on your trip (bypasses the ammeter with one
and ensures good ground for the charging system and headlights, etc with the
other)

I don't expect any problems after discussing my "new" J-10's
condition
with the owner, but you never know! I'm only taking my
Leatherman with
me. Thought about taking a small tool kit, but I doubt there's
much I
could do, and you always seem to have brought everything except
what you
need when you do.

Anyone on here that's between New York City and Delaware along
I-95, or
in close proximity? If you don't mind, I'd like a phone number
just in
case! My wife's going with me "for the ride". We will both have
our cell
phones. It's only a three hour drive, but I expect to take it
easy and
take four hours since it's an unfamiliar vehicle. No point in
pushing
it! But it's a long walk...

Andy,
The original T-96 was a NON OD. The T-14 OD transmission was shorter. I had
to have a drive shaft made. The original drive shaft was 4 feet and I had to
have a new drive shaft made to 4 feet 6 inches. The tranny crossmember was
modified by cutting the metal behind the transmission mount, heating the
metal then bending it down to extend the flat area where the tranny mount
will sit. New bracing was welded around the metal that was flatten, new
holes drilled to move the tranny mount back.
The 35 amp alternator did not put out enough amperage to operate the
overdrive and the A/C at the same time. I now have a 51 amp alternator and
Can run both overdrive and A/C. I also had to make up the wiring harness. I
use the wiring diagram in the TSM. You will also need to have a kickdown
switch with 4 prongs. Any other questions, you can e-mail me.
Thanks

Hi Bob, thanks for the info. Was the original T-96 a NON OD? All the info
I've seen say that the T-96-OD is the same length as the T-14-OD. If so,
what drive shaft did you use? How did you modify the tranny
crossmember? Thanks for your help, I'm going to do this swap in the next
year.
