I'm glad I'm not the only one with the affliction of such things.

It has occurred to me (not that I'll do anything with this) that
there's no reason intake runners have to be cast metal. I keep
imagining a cast flange, semi-rigid plastic tubing of the right
diameter, up over the valve cover, to a plenum for the carb(s).
Nice long runners. Plenum could be a flat plate bolted anywhere.

I happen to have such a thing... though I did think of this
before I obtained this object:

Another ?Put Up or Shut Up? sale.

I just towed home a ?73 AMX that is very rough, but it?s a well-optioned
car, having all the good stuff- functional cowl induction, 15? wheels,
twin grip, and is originally a Wild Plum car, now a faded black. It?s a
?P?-code 360-4v/Auto with a black vinyl interior (tho the seller thought
it might have once been a Pierre Cardin car, but I forget what trim code
that was in ?73). He also said the trans was rebuilt shortly before he
parked it due to the rust issues in ?97. The 360 *should* wake up with
the usual minor efforts. Clear NJ title showing 55k original miles,
odometer reads 77k.

The functional hood?s fiberglass skin is excellent, as are the rear
screen and the underside?s metal insert for the rubber seal. The metal
frame, however, is BADLY rotted out around the driver-side hinge mount.
I have a good steel hood that can provide a replacement frame, included
free with the car. I also have a NON-functional cowled hood available
for sale- needs minor corner fixes, but could also be converted to
functional status using this car?s hood. The correct air cleaner is also
in the car, with a nice seal and lid with flap. The inner lid is not
with it, but may be in the trunk (no key- haven?t crawled in yet to see
what else is in there). I?m also told the grille screen may be in the
trunk- unknown as yet, but I have a decent screen I will include with
the car if the original is missing. I also have the proper parking
lights in an extra, busted-up grille.

Anywayz, I grabbed it not to fix it (I have plenty of projects), but to
pass it on. I look and see a pile of sellable parts, but like others,
I?d prefer the car be saved and restored. I fear most will look at it
and say ?not a chance?, but in the hopes someone will fix it, I?ll give
it a shot at leaving me whole?and to discourage any buyer from parting
it out, it is priced based on what I feel it?s worth in parts,
eliminating the profit incentive of parting it. I figure if it doesn?t
sell within two weeks, *I* will do the parting out- and I won?t feel so
bad after I?ve given it a shot to leave me whole.

So- if you think it?s savable and shouldn?t be parted out, crack open
your wallet and save it. Otherwise, watch for the parts next month on
eBay. The yard is full, so it can?t wait around for months, hoping for a
savior. It?s dead meat in two weeks.

Located in Morristown, NJ 07960. $2000 firm.

I can send a good pile of detail photos to anyone seriously considering
buying the car?Email me for those.

Won this one on e-bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320038432091&rd=1,1
If that doesn't work try searching for item #320038432091.

Doesn't look like much, but I called the owner. He bought it 12 years ago and has been using it for light hauling and some snow plowing. He says he plowed a couple parking lots on average 2-3 times a year. The timing chain was replaced a year ago, probably the jerking back and forth from plowing caused it to stretch, though stretch isn't unusual at 85-90K miles. Looks like I may have paid a bit much, but in the last four years everything but the shortblock has been replaced or rebuilt. Trans (T-176 four speed), transfer case (NP-208), front axle u-joints, and driveshaft u-joints (front and rear). It was painted a couple years ago. He says there are a couple spots bubbling under the paint on the bed where he sand blasted rust areas then the paint shop let it sit for a couple weeks before painting. Might just be moisture coming through from the back. I'm going to let him keep and sell the plow since I have no need for it. In return I'm going to ask if he'll throw in the cap he!
  said h
e'd let me have for $200 or so if I wanted it. I'd have to have had most of that work done over the next few years, and probably cost me more if I'd got a $1000-$1500 truck. I think I'll be ahead of the game in the long run by spending a bit more than I wanted. I was going to just look at some F-150 six cylinder four and five speeds if this fell through because I need something I can drive right away with only minor work. Have to make arrangements to go get it now. Will be driving it back to Delaware! Funny thing is is was purchased from someone in Delaware 12 years ago...

There is another J-10 on e-bay that appears to be in decent condition, but not run much for a while. It's a 360 w/four speed. It's going cheap! The 360 turns over but owner says he can't get it to actually start, and hasn't had time to do any trouble shooting. The real sticky point is he has no title. I can get a title, and would have went and looked at it if it were a bit closer and I had more time before I wanted to use a truck. A three hour drive from Dover to go look at something I'd need to go over before driving much is to far. Not sure what condition brakes and such are in, so driving it back (assuming not running is a minor problem) would be a bit iffy at best! Someone closer with a few hours to work on it or a trailer would have a pretty decent truck. Looks all original, the 63K miles might be original -- sure doesn't look like 163K (unless it's been on the highway a lot!). Just my opinion -- haven't talked to the guy!

I have a customer with a '78 J20 with 360 who is looking for a vacuum
advance. For some reason I can't find the part number in NAPA in either the
book (the newest one. The old one with all the old part numbers was
thoughtfully tossed by the "new kid" cuz it was old and shabby looking!) or
computer. Only the whole dist is listed and I can't get a parts breakdown.
Motorcraft style dist with 360 4 bbl 4 speed.

Frank,

Congratulations on your truck. I hope more AMCers get
trucks so they will be a little more reluctant to
criticize those of us who use our trucks as everyday
drivers.

My Silverado with 4.8L V8 gets 20 to 22 mpg, has an
overdrive transmission, rides good, and will tow a
trailer with an AMC car on it. It's everything I need
for parts runs and junkyard runs. It won't be my
daily driver once I get another AMC ready for the
road, but it will probably be the nicest vehicle I own
for quite some time.

You could have had this one if you were willing to
ship it.

Good luck with the rig.
