The kid always drove expensive (to us) fast cars. One day he relented and let us less-cool kids hang out while he assembled some V8 motor at his dad's garage -- installing crankshaft bearing caps with an air impact wrench, good and tight! The earlier axles are tight in the bearing. The C-clip axle knock in and out on rough roads and clunk! If you've got a choice of two axles, like gear, posi etc; I'd pick the earlier axle due to larger brakes and the quieter operation. That being said, I know there is a popular swap to Grand Cherokee rear discs on the XJ axle, early and late will work, you jsut have to do a few things differently. I'm wondering what it would take to move up to the 10" brakes on a 97 axle. Got hold of a 250+ torque wrench and used the extension and jack technique to tighten axle bolt. Brakes are frozen all around so after they're rebuilt I'll be able to tell if it that axle's really seated correctly, but this was the biggest hurdle. Was wondering if you might be able to answers some questions about a 1982 AMC Spirit. Even if you cannot answer them I do want to thank you for your time. I bought a 1982 Spirit hatch today...because I had to get rid of my 66 Marlin, and still wanted to drive an AMC. It's a 258/column auto. It came with a Haynes manual. Was looking thru it, trying to identify the transmission. All it gave were 2 choices, a 908 and 998. Would you happen to know how to tell the difference between the two transmissions? Can either one of these trannies be beefed up, or should it just be replaced with a 727? How difficult is it to install a 290-401 type V8 and applicable trans into this chassis? I ask this, because I have no knowledge if the 258 6 cylinder is worth modifying for more power. Is there anything that can be done, suspension wise, to improve the handling? Perhaps some of the older Javelin/AMX suspension pieces might fit...they did offer stronger springs, bigger sway bars, and those traction rods, right? I'm not looking to make a super radical car. Heck, even a 304 with 1hp per cube would be fine. I don't know if this is even possible, but I'd like to get the 18-20mpg my old Marlin got, with maybe 300hp. Just a good handling, well balanced AMC with some poke...kinda like the original AMX's were. Well, just thought if anyone might have a clue about such things, it would be you. Thank you again for your time and consideration. Brian O'Hare 1982 AMC Spirit -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. SNIP Of course this same T&C, a replacement for a station wagon which if memory serves was an automobile, at least my Hornet wagon in the driveway sure looks like one is classified for the purposes of smog certification as a light truck! It just seems to me that if it is one, it sure should act more like one when needed. http://www.cfact.org/site/print.asp?idarticle=233 But to be fair, I had to use a 1980 Eagle for a wiring harness donation and found it was certified in California as a light truck. This allowed it to have minimal smog components installed and as a light truck, it did not show up in my files of Eagle smog configurations as I have collected the AUTOMOBILE OR CAR data. I don't know where you go to find Eagle Truck data. SNIP "Permit expanded use of the automobile for cargo-carrying purposes or other nonpassenger-carrying purposes through the removal of seats by means installed for that purpose by the automobile's manufacturer or with simple tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches, so as to create a flat, floor level, surface extending from the forward-most point of installation of those seats to the rear of the automobile's interior." SNIP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeSoto_Suburban http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/bv/kaiser_traveler.htm These probably would have been more successful if smog rules were implemented sooner. But due to apathy and other related emotions they are gone and we now have the Kia http://www.topspeed.com/cars/kia/index50.html that comes from a country that at the same time the Traveler was being manufactured our Ambassadors were using their combined mentality of possible double digits and were trying to divide the country in two. With time passing and objectives becoming more clarified we probably stand a chance now to combine the benefits of a mushroom shaped cloud with said station wagon and be able to find it at night because it glows in the dark! The whole thing is beginning to suggest that I re-evaluate the practical aspect of restoring my Hornet Station wagon and placing it in daily service again. After all, it has only lasted 30 years so far despite an adequate amount of neglect and abuse. The transmission will still move the thing forward and backwards despite barfing out a pint or so of fluid just when you don't expect it. The total cost of doing so based on components collected and on the shelf including a replacement transmission and engine will probably cost about the same as 2 more transmissions for my T&C which if precedence and history are any indicators I may have to use before I get the Hornet restored no matter what Dr. Z wrote on his prescription pad. And the Chrysler has had the best of care and is only 10 years old! With more than a bit of frustration for the evening. He bougt a used trans and it went to 100K, He liked the van so he bought a rebuild from MOPAR, installed it himself and it didn't work right, he took it to the dealer they checked it out and agreed it was in need of internal work, so they swapped it out under the warranty, The one they put in didn't work right either, SO they swapped it again! The amcforums has some good info on this stuff. For an engine, easiest choice is to build a stroker six. It will get you your required fuel econamy and not have you redo the entire car. You need a Jeep 4.0L block, install the Spirits 4.2L Rods and Crank with 4.0L pistons. Instant 275 cubic inches in standard bore! Install a mild cam, free flow exhaust and the fuel injection setup from an 91-95 Jeep and you'll have a real performer. There is a Jeep Strokers Forum on Yahoo that deals with these engines and all the info needed to pull it off. I have a non stroked Jeep 4.0L [242 cu.in] in my 69 American with Fuel injection. Frank Swygert has a Stroked engine in his 63 Rambler Classic wagon. Both of us would not consider pulling these engines in favor of a V-8 swap. if you are into handling, that's another reason to stick with the six. Mount a new Gel cell battery in the back and soem Addco swaynars front and rear, KYB or other performance shocks, an alignment for handling. You can also get a lot of tire under the SPirit with the right wheels. Your main limiting factors with the Spirit is how much do youwant to spend! The flip side is if you are carefull you can do a lot of this from a Junkyard and Ebay! -- Mark Price markprice242ATadelphia.net Morgantown, WV ---- Eddie Stakes <eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > The folks below are asking a number of questions pertaining to a Spirit. I have today finished the trough area rebuild of the passenger side of the convertible! I am now suffering the consequences of doing to much when I shouldn't. Three months ago I had maybe 2-3 hours work left on that trough area. So since I've finally gotten pretty mobile I started to carefully work on the remaining details. I ground down and cleaned up the previous work, then yesterday and today I welded in the remaining pieces and the only thing needed is to drill a few drain holes. I'm quite happy with the outcome. Now what you said about new trucks is not entirely true( no offence).NOT trying to argue but.. In 2004 i bought a brand new(first BRAND NEW vehicle)2004 F150 4x4 FX4 off road supercab. Will never buy a new vehicle again SINCE i got laid-off from the good paying factory job i had back them. There are NO good paying jobs available in Illinois for older (i'm 51)guys now!! ANYWAY.... I've hauled parts, engines ,rearends..etc from the first day i had it!! I drove it from Illinois to New Mexico and Texas then back to Illinois the third week i owned it. Hauled home four car doors, two hoods, pair of fenders,a 1969 Javelin rearend, disk brake assys, crank shafts, AND pulled a trailer with a 401 in it. YES it cost me a fortune to buy a NEW truck. BUT i USE it regularly. I'm always pulling my car trailer somewhere to get a car/truck,parts..etc.YES it's still dent/ding free with 45,000 miles on it. Bedliner is pretty scraped up though. I take care of it and do not abuse it. At Walmart i park WAYYY out so as not to get door dings! Same thing with my old AMC's!! BUT I bought it to USE. Just wanted to let you know that not all new truck owners are afraid to USE them. Also...i'll tie up bumper to bumper with a TOYOTA Tundra anyday!! A pull-off would be FUN!
