A: That would be @'91 and newer. Prior to that, the Dana 35 XJ axle (which shares the center section with Model 15) has the style where the backing plate holds the axle in. It's tougher to tell in car but if the whole differential is out of the car, you can see the axle tube is larger diameter at the backing plate to fit the bearing on earlier rigs ('84 to 08/90 and maybe more) I never got around to checking to see if the early XJ axles would swap with Eagle axles. I do know you can bolt the whole XJ rear diff into an Eagle (I've done it twice) but the shock mounts need to be cut off and repositioned. If you keep an eye out for a parts Comanche, you may even find a D44 or Model 20 (you'll need shock mounts and new spring pads welded on to bolt it in) From: "Swygert, Francis G MSgt 436 CES/CECM" <Francis.Swygert3@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] pulling an axle To: <johnnykazek@xxxxxxxxxxx>, <mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <092D8CF6635129428E9B66DC582C3B3D019AC8D4@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Just slip the axle right back in. You may have to rotate it once it's in to line the splines up, but that's all. Nothing else was supposed to come loose or out with it. Don't know what Russ was talking about as far as loosening the caps in the differential. May be required on a different design, but all the AMCs I've pulled just come right out after a good tug. Once you get the axle splines lined up (it will slide in a little more) you sill probably have to put a block of wood across the end of the axle and give it a couple whacks to seat it. Loosening the caps as Russ suggested might make the axles pull out/push in easier, but it's not necessary. The only exception is the late model Cherokee axles -- they have C-clips in the diff that hold the axles in, the backing plates don't. C-clip axles require the diff cover to come off and the clips removed. _________________________________________________________________ Stay in touch with old friends and meet new ones with Windows Live Spaces http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwsp0070000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://spaces.live.com/spacesapi.aspx?wx_action=create&wx_url=/friends.aspx&mkt=en-us _______________________________________________ AMC-List mailing list AMC-List@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list or go to http://www.amc-list.com
