Well there's that... :-) But it's so easy for me to suggest
things, and have you do them for me :-) Send photos please!

I agree, a hotter cam would be the practical path to more power
especialyl if you've got it apart already.

I'm serious on the pictures though. If you're rebuilding a 196
ohv, hardly anyone knows anything about that motor, pictures
and how you go about putting it together would be a huge boon
to AMC history and fellow enthusiasts.

If you get a cam ground, post the specs, who ground it, and
the grind number.

Take 100 pictures, you can't take too many. Buy a few disposable
cameras if you must. I volunteer to scan them & upload somewhere
if you don't have a digital camera and the desire to do all
that web crap.

Yeah, exactly my thought!
especially if the base circle is the same or larger.
If it was larger you could get one regorund and not need to do the pushrod thing!
Just have them leave the base circle at the stock overhead cam spec!

Just thought that I would share a couple of old AMC commercials, the
Rebel commercial is very funny. You will need "real player" installed in
order to view these.

THANKS Barry!
Those are GREAT. I especially liked in the 1st one the driver of the
corvette. Then the Rebel o ne was the fact that they were dodging, Ramblers
all along the roads!

Plus that reminded me that I think the most common phrase I hear is that "I
learned to drive in a Rambler" from people. Wonder IF these were any of
them???

THANKS, It made the day!

if you have a delco distributor you can get a vac can that handles

" I was looking through the Advance Adapters catalog and noticed something

" long and fits between the bell and trans (Ford style trans, which should
" be the same as AMC). It has a 27% OD and is fully synchronized, allowing
" splitting all gears. The gear spread in most trannys wouldn't make it
" worthwhile to split all gears I'm sure, but it could be done.
" []
" Four speeds would be a problem, the four speed shifter
" would be moved 7.5" further back, between bucket seats.

bigger problem is that few 4sp have gears wide enough to split well
with a 27% o/d. the wide ratio t170 series - t177? - with the 3.82
1st would barely do it. overdrive toploaders would do well in 1st and
2nd, but the built in o/d is only 30% or 33% so splitting 3rd is out.

now a ford pattern t18 or t19...

" It would be interesting, but costs about the
" same as a Gear Vendors OD unit ($1504.20 plus shipping).

yow... i think you could get a tremec 5sp for that much, certainly a
used one! and the warner aftermkt hd t5 [ford svt 'z-code'] is only
$1100.

Found this on WPS.com and a parts place.
piston pin .9310
bore 4"
Height 4 bbl .938
Stock 2bbl .890 doing this conversion by math
replacement 2 bbl .874
The .874 compression heigth piston seems to be the only game in town and runs $340-400 plus per set.
Now can an alternative be found?
