I made a new breather hole and plugged the old one, then filled the diff through the new breather till oil covered things enough. Sounded like a I had a blower on the car! Real fun was being able to drive backwards at 60 mph with 2 speeds! The gears wouldn't be riding in oil with the pinion near the top. But then there are axles made that way -- wonder if they have anything in them to pull oil up top? Probably not -- should be plenty splash oiling with the ring gear running in oil. To change rotation on a Corvair (or VW/Prsche) transaxle is easy -- put the ring gear on the opposite side. The way those are made they flip over easy. I didn't know if an adapter was needed or not, just that SBCs have been mated to the Corvair transaxle. -- Frank Swygert _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself - download free Windows Live Messenger themes! http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwme0020000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://imagine-msn.com/themes/vibe/default.aspx?locale=en-us&source=hmtagline ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2006 09:37:03 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] rambler hot rod To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F7F40349BD9B074547686AAC1C0@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed On the 6 cyl, you'd just use a Chev 6 cyl dist and cut the drive gears on the cam to match! <G> From: Peter Marano <PMarano@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] rambler hot rod To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <4521167F.5030004@xxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > >Except for the oil pump and distributor (vacc. advance, >lubrication), I can't think of a reason not to run the engine >the other direction (requires new cam of course). > > > Two things come to mind: Bearing journals are polished in the direction of rotation (or at least they used to be). The oil seal journal on the rear of the crankshaft has directional knurling. I think the front seal has a directional pattern molded in. The new cam would require a reverse rotation distributor drive gear (and driven gear) which would turn the distributor and oil pump in the 'normal' direction. This would allow the thrust on the distributor drive to hold the camshaft in the block. Reverse rotation SBC are common enough that an engine builder should know what to do. Is the SBC cam gear the same as the inline AMC six? If a cam grinder can't cut the reverse rotation gear on an AMC cam a gear drive would reverse the rotation of the cam. My take: Front axle should be a Dana 60 (or maybe 9". Dana 44 if not too much power is made) flipped from a 4x4. D30 won't take much power to kill if it's the only drive axle. OR Rear motor facing forwards using Jeep 727 trans and NP208 tcase from a CJ10 tug shifted to 4 high (I drove my '83 Cherokee for several months this way with no rear driveshaft) The one from a tug is built stronger than a regular Jeep one (wider chain, etc) as they are used to move planes on the tarmack with a Nissan diesel. Six cylinder, sort of "old style" rod, track-roadster-ish. Two seats. Open wheels (motorcycle-type fenders), no doors, no roof. I really want a mid-engine car, but Hallibrand transaxles are out of my range, but I think I've come up with a scheme for a rear engine, front drive car, using a jeep or eagle front axle. I do have this Navarro-built turbo six... but it's not a requirement, and might not be appropriate to run in the street. The big chunks lay out OK for a 104" plus or minus wheelbase. The main problem is engine/front axle rotation and offset. I have only a Haynes manual for Jeep, though I've seen 'em. I'm only at the planning stage (and it may never get past that). Does anyone know: * Rotation direction for the jeep or eagle front axle? * How much offset, front driveshaft to centerline of the car? Looks like 6 - 8" from my crappy drawings. Big HP isn't a goal, so driveline strength isn't an issue. It goes without saying it'll be all AMC. I figure standard hotrod kitcar junk for the rest of it. Weight distribution won't be all that great (heavy rear), eh, I'm not racing. _________________________________________________________________ Get today's hot entertainment gossip http://movies.msn.com/movies/hotgossip ------------------------------ Message: 6 Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2006 12:57:07 -0400 (EDT) From: adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Sandwich Maker) Subject: Re: [AMC-List] rambler hot rod To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx, carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <200610031657.k93Gv7c08851@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> " From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> " " On the 6 cyl, you'd just use a Chev 6 cyl dist and cut the drive gears on " the cam to match! <G> tell the grinder to put a chev 6 drive gear on the cam... They do not squeek, period! I have put the same bushings on my Hornet but I am still working on it, so it sits. My AMX was done maybe 4 years ago, my American two. I greased em up real good prior to installation. If it called for a dollop of grease, I gave it two. I twisted the bushings to seat them and kept things clean during installation. After the job was done I wiped off the excess. My American gets driven year round, it is no garage queen. My AMX get parked in the garage during the winter but it has seen its share of rain. To this day neither of them squeek. I did have door alignment problems with the AMX at first and had to realign them, but that is all. With the fat sway bars, Koni shocks, sub frame connectors and polys it rides real firm and handles nice, expect the same depending on how deep you go into the polys.
