Another possibility is dirty electrical connections. I had a "no start" situation with my 4.0L when I first installed it in my Rambler. I was getting sprak, but it was weak. The culprit was a slightly corroded connector to the ignition module. 87-90 Renix connectors are all TIN plated. There will eventually build up a little corrosion, especially if the thing has sat for a while (corrosion doesn't build up much when in use). Get some spray contact cleaner and pull EVERY connection, spray, and plug back up. Sometimes there is a good CPS but the connector is just corroded enough to weaken or change the impedence of the signal. You can't see the corrosion, but it's there!! I looked over mine, then took it to a small shop with a code reader. They spent a week on it (off and on, not constantly!) then finally charged me $100 -- after not finding out why it wouldn't run (they spent more than $100 worth of time on it though -- I wasn't unsatisfied). Then I took it to the local Jeep !
dealer
(this was 1999) who still had the Jeep/Renault specific diagnostic machine. He never hooked it up. I explained to the tech what all we'd tried, and he used a spark checking tool to check strength of spark. $65 later (their minimum charge) it was running!!

in this same vein, i'd want to follow that cleaner spray up with
contact grease, to keep the air from corroding the contacts again.

I'm looking atthe 62 auto trans strating circuit now. There are no blue wires to the starter, just a red and green. The red one should be connected to the same post as the wire from the battery. The green one is connected to the other post on the solenoid.
There is a blue wire listed though. It is the kick-down wire for the transmission. There should be a kick-down switch on the throttle linkage somewhere. Then the blue wire runs into the transmission.
As Tom pointed out, the vacuum switch is indeed a neutral safety switch. There should be a red wire running to one post if it has two, the other post would be grounded. If there is only one post it grounds through the body.
These starters have an arm that pushes in an over running clutch. If the clutch or solenoid is bad it won't engage. The solenoid is pretty easy to check. Just look at the starter while someone turns the switch to the "start" position. You can see the solenoid pull the arm in. According to the TSM "the pinion (gear) on the over running clutch should turn freely in one direction and should lock in the other direction. Replace the clutch if it fails to check as above or if the pinion is excessively worn or damaged." It also states that it should be wiped or brushed with solvent, but NEVER submerged since that will wash out any lubricant, which can't be replaced.
If you think you need a new starter take it to a local auto or industrial electric rebuilder. Look in the yellow pages and make a few phone calls. You might have to send it off to be rebuilt. The clutch is held onto the end of the armature with a snap ring. The nose of the starter comes off without distrubing the brushes, which are in the back. Just make sure you push the pinion gear/clutch in as you're pulling the nose off so you don't pull the armature out. You might be able to find a replacement over running clutch and install yourself. It's an Autolite MDY-6009 starter.

I am having some problems withmy digital camera.
As for the bumper ends, they are black in color with ridges and about
8-9 inches long after they make the curve. They don't extend and
interlock intothe wheel flares that the later Eagle models used.
As for the rear plastic, looking at it quickly, it looks like it is
held in place with plastic plugs and has the same same and contour of
the body.
If you still want to see pictures, let me know and I will get them to
you as soon as possible.

Our so-called "Big-3" have now -become- AMC. Ad nauseum I said they would while no one listened. No one recalled Pierce, Packard, or Studebaker; no one learned from history. The accomplishment that had made our American motors the world's undisputed automotive leader seems so sadly squandered: lost in the swirling seas of our own stupidity.
Oh, we'll still rumble on in our '60s muscle cars, purr on in our '30s classics, and drool on over any fresh/retro model Detroit will still be able to sell. We'll still buy new/old Mustang/Cuda/Camaros; we'll still build old/new T-Bucket/Leadsled/Machines; we'll still moan & groan, buy & drive, wine & dine and live the life large like it was 1906/1926/1966/2006 still. But we won't be doing it like we once did --- because when -we- have burned through all our cash/credit/accomplishment, there won't be any "us" in the US to still build on. We/our government/legacy/past won't have another shot. Will history write: "...like AMC!" then or will anyone still learn, or write, or read any history about any lost American independents?
