NAMDRA had about 150 to 160 cars , half race and half show. Scott the track owner thought we were doing good to hold at the same level we had last year considering gas prices and what I consider a poor economy. The guy with the AMC powered t-bucket race car won the race again this year not sure of his name. Don Wiese won I believe particapants choice , not with his 66 American convertible but with his 71 Javelin and Don Pearrow won the judged show with his 70 AMX , a previous American cup winner for AMO. We ordered more t-shirts this year and had only 5 or 6 left. The meet went about as smothly as I've even seen any meet go. Thanks for your support. The car has a rebuilt engine, beautiful and sparklingly clean. The car started and ran to drive it on and off of my car trailer, and then started again several times as I played with the carburetor. After some adjustments, I turned off the car left it for a bit, and when I returned the car will not start. I can hear a muffled, very fast "th-th-th-th-th" from the area where the starter is, but it is as if the starter gear is not engaging. It was not the typical failed solenoid single click sound. I have put the car into "L" and rocked the car back and forth, then when that didn't work I tapped on the started with a mallet. But to no avail. When I was under the car looking at the starter, I see that a blue wire off the starter is cut. Also, when I had the air cleaner off the car, I noticed that part of the wiring harness is disconnected. Right behind the coil, there are three wires that come off the harness, a yellow to the coil, an orange one (I think) to coolant temp sensor, and then a disconnected red one. It looks to me like the disconnected red one is supposed to plug into that vacuum sensor that prevents the starter from engaging when you shift into neutral while the car is running. If I have identified it right, this sensor is on the intake manifold right behind the carburetor, but the plug was busted off of it. I pulled an extra, used vacuum sensor from my stock of 196 parts, but it didn't solve the starting problem when I put it on and connected the wire. This is my first 327 engine, so I'm sort of in the dark here. My questions are: - where does the blue white from the starter go? - is the vacuum sensor in fact what I found behind the carb? I did have a quick look at the TSM but couldn't locate these wires in my limited time to problem solve. If I need a replacement starter for this car, does anyone see on on Ebay right now that will fit? It was not the typical > failed solenoid single click sound. Of course its hard to put sounds into text, but is it the sound of a fat electric motor spinning, that winds down to zero after you turn the key off? Or some other noise? If I recall, that motor doesn't use a Bendix type starter, but an overrunning clutch type. There's probably a fat lump on the side that is the solenoid that pushes the pinion gear into the ring gear. The starter motor shaft is splined and the pinion slides on it. The solenoid has a fork that pushes the pinion into the ring. You have a TSM, right? If the starter motor whirs, but the solenoid doesn't pull in all the way, it won't turn the 327 over. I forget how all the wiring goes, but if this is happening, and you didn't rewire it recently, and nothing fell off or burned up, it's not wiring. I think the rule of thumb with these starters is, you never throw out old ones, and keep a spare around! You can get it rebuilt, but may have a hard tim egettin one from AUtoZone (though they always surprise me). You can thump the solenoid hard with a rubber hammer (to jar it, not dent it!) or take it out and clean and grease it. RTFM! I had one that didn't like to pull in in cold weather, for example. I forget how they wear out. > I have put the car into "L" and rocked the car back > and forth, Useless. It';s fluid coupled! Push at 30 mph and put into 2nd. You are correct, there is a vacuum sensor switch screwed into the intake manifold; it grounds the wire when there is NO vacuum, eg. engine vacuum OPENS the switch. If the starter motor runs this switch is fine. If it fails, it will be like pressin NEUTRAL/start with the car off and key out -- complete silence. (You can jumper that wire to ground in a pinch, though the starter will grind when you push NEUTRAL with the car running if you jumper it out.) ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 18:55:39 -0700 From: Mark Price <markprice242@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] [strokers] Moving an American, Mass to Westvirginia? I saw the dr today and everything is good but it will be 5 weeks from today before the brace comes off, then I still will have to get the collar bone pin pulled. plus I will have no vacation time left at that point. :[ I'll try again tomorrow to see if I can come up with someone who is allready heading this way from there. -- Mark Price markprice242ATadelphia.net Morgantown, WV ---- Carl Rogers <carl-rogers@xxxxxxx> wrote: > Try the transport section of www.ytmag.com > > That is an old tractor site and a lot of those guys move stuff > around. I will make a more complete report to the list when I get the time. But first of all it was not the same person who won (and you forgot to mention it was the AMC ELIMINATOR race) last year in a T-bucket (AMC powered of course!). Last year it was Deacon Kallish of Wauconda, IL. This year it was long time NAMDRA member, Warren Kroll of Franksville, WI. And Don Wiese of Rockford, IL did not win the "Participants Choice" award in the car show (he did 3 years ago with his Rambler convertible) but it was his son, Dave Wiese of Racine, WI with his 71 Javelin SST. And a big thank you to all that attended the meet and to all of the sponsors of the meet.
