Before I go through great lengths to research something that someone else has already done, what is my "best" option for rear springs for my 1973 4-dr. Matador? The rear is sagging and I need to fix that. I am not concerned with stock vs. non-stock and would tend towards the performance end of things and may someday tow with this vehicle.

Of course I could always put in the Air-Lift bags.

I was hoping to find some progressive rate springs but my preliminary research doesn't find any.

Any comments, experience, ideas, cross references, web sites?

Thanks in advance

Doug

Gary, what does the end on your speedo cable look like? AMC used two that I can think of. The early one (Borg Warner trans) used a round "plug" about an inch in diameter with the cable centered in it. The end was made onto the cable. 1972 and later TF trans used a larger, maybe 1.5" diameter hole in the trans, but that was for the gear carrier (or adapter if you want to call it that). The cable had a small screw on end about the same size as the speedo end.

To check the speedo head, pull the cable from the trans and chuck the end in a reversible drill. Spin it up, and if you get nothing, reverse it. What year car are you working with? pre 63 speedos turned one direction (but includes 63 American), 63+ the other. Make sure the inner cable is long enough and seated. That can sometimes be a problem.

The compressor mount depends on the year of the engine and intake manifold. Check the engine code number for year. Assuming the manifolds haven't been changed, get the same year mounts. Factory mounts should be easy enough to come by, but you'll need a York to Sanden conversion mount. Those can be purchased from any A/C shop, it's a popular swap. The Sanden takes much less room and power than the old York. I'd only use a York in a restoration.

Some time ago Frank suggested that maybe the problem with my
speedo was that it was being turned in reverse. I tend to
believe it as I know the tranny is not original to the car, and
the old cable had the tranny end hose clamped together. I always
thought it was clamped because someone wanted to shorten it. I
threw away the old cable. I have a new cable, it went in just
fine, but neither of the heads that I have seem to work. Does
anyone have any more thoughts on this and or some parts for
sale?
Also, I purchased an under dash AC system for this car. I think
I am going to have to find a way to mount the Power steering
pump elswhere, as I think the compressor goes where it is. This
is the 232 motor.
Does anyone have any thoughts and or parts for sale concerning
this?
Thank everyone for all their help with this, and in the past!
Gary Kirk

John Elle has a good point. You can't expect a 26+ year old car to be as comfortable or perform as well as a much newer one. Time and technology march on. There's nothing wrong with a modern daily driver to keep miles off your AMC. Use the driver to run around most of the time and the AMC for the pleasure driving.

Or you can do what I did -- take a less desireable AMC and modernize it. My Classic wagon with 4.6L gets about the same mileage and performance as a last year XJ Cherokee (2005?). It rides much better than the original car or the Cherokee, of course, and when it was a 4.0L got a little better mileage. I'm happy with 22-24 on the highway with the power I have though (16-18 in town, and an overall average of 19-20). It has all the creature comforts (AC, nice stereo, power seats -- don't have power windows or locks, though I may add locks and will power the tailgate window) yet still maintains the look and feel of an old car, mainly because there are only subtle body mods and the dash remains stock. A Concord or Hornet would be perfect for this kind of treatment. An EFI four with the proper trans and gearing would have as much or more power as the carbed 258 (1983 MPI Jeep XJ 2.5L = 130 hp @ 5250 rpm; 149 lb/ft @ 3250 rpm -- 1983 Eagle 258 = 110 hp @ 3200 rpm; 210 lb/ft @ 1800 !
 rpm). W
hen you note the differences in rpm ranges you'll see why I say "proper trans and gearing" is needed. The engine needs to cruise near the torque peak. A 258 Concord works fine with 2.35:1 axle in 82-83, but the four would need a lot steeper gearing (82 Eagle used a 3.54 w/998, 2.73 with manual trans and low first gear) to cruise around 3000 rpm. It needs to be at that rpm even in OD in order for it to pull without using MORE gas. OD only reduces engine rpm for cars with low rear axles. It's not as much of a gas saver as people think, since to low in the rpm range will increase fuel consumption even if the engine will pull the vehicle. It will help fuel economy some by having a lower first gear -- less work to get the car moving -- and by keeping the engine in its most efficient rpm range longer since it has more gears to choose from.

Tom has ALMOST done this with his most recent car, the 70 Hornet. With EFI on that six now it will be a bit of a hot rod, but won't increase fuel mileage but 2-3 mpg.

BLASPHEMY! BLASPHEMY! LALALALALALALALALALALALALLALALALALALA I
cant hear you... !

(After I wrote this it sounded to me like I was criticising your
choices, John; I'm not. We're all different and make different
decisions, I'm totally fine with that!)

Yup, techology marched on since AMC. While I drive exclusively
AMCs (commute in my 70 Hornet) we own one 1996 Civic DX; little
motor, auto trans, A/C. Out-handles any AMC car (and not just
due to weight). A/C is a no-brainer. And so on...

Personally, I drive old stuff not just for the old-car-ness,
but because I specifically don't like to take part in consumer
culture; I make what I drive; I drive slower, and with windows
open. I hear (and umm, feel) my car run. I'm no Luddite, I just
like to pick which technologies I think will actually improve
my life (radial tires anyone?).

I could probably lop off 10 minutes each way to work if I drove
75 - 80 like everyone else, but I don't want the stress, the
competitiveness, or the gas consumption.

I drive older cars partly to SLOW THE HELL DOWN. It's also why
I'll never put electric wipers in my Rambler. If I wanted a
new car, I'd drive a 1970!

(I did install AC in the Rambler, I certainly enjoy it, but it
really does change the driving experience.)

i would go to espo or eaton detroit and get oem hd replacements. i
did that on my '67 marlin and while stiffer than '60s standard they
weren't really -stiff-, just nicely firm.

there are also some rock hard trailer towing rears.

i also got stock hd fronts and put low pressure gas shocks all around.
great ride! very important if you want to tow; soft fronts with stiff
rears would unbalance your handling.

iirc the stock hd are progressive.

Hi guys, I have an engine performance book, softbound, created by Dick
Datson in 1996 . It is all AMC engines. I have no need for it anymore and if
any one of you out there would like to own it for $1.00 plus postage, let
me know. I am cleaning out a bunch of literature that I have accumulated
over the past 20 years or so.

Ironically it is ultra easy to get a vehicle from US into Mexico, but very
difficult to get one from Mexico into US. My suggestion would be to work
with the seller having him get it this side of the border, using a temp visa
as a tourist. It would probably be safer also changing hands and currency or
however ya'll decide to do it. You would worry about a title and formalities
later.

The vehicle however is in Guadalajara also. How far is that? I have driven
from Houston to Guadalajara straight thru (three of us taking turns) and it
was a little over 22 hours.

Once the car is securely in the US (again I would suggest you meet the
seller this side of border, and I would also suggest if brought inland to
say, San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix or another POE, offer to pay his
airfare back to Guadalajara. Would be less than $200. A small price to pay
to have a unique one of a kind AMC/VAM here in US to show off at next AMC
meet!

At a Goodyear tire store off Dairy Ashford here in Houston is a sign that
says "they don't build cars like that anymore, thank God!"

I happened to be in my 72 Ambassador sST picking up wife Paige from the
First Tee where she had been playing cards, watching the Texans get beat
like a drum by Colts. Since the Goodyear was closed, and will be until
8:00am monday morning, I decided to park, and play scrabble with the sign,
both Noah & Jacob wondering what I'm spelling on the board.

This was a no brainer, as the other side of sign facing the subdivision had
specials like 'tire alignment' and 'shocks' and 'special' so in a mater of 3
or so minutes the sign ended up looking like this: "AMC BUILT CARS LIKE
THAT, THANK GOD!" and I just wished I had my darned camera with me to take a
photo of that. Would have made a great photo, especially with this thread.
I'm guessing the people who come into tomorrow and see the sign changed will
wonder what a AMC is. I'm also wondering what all that north/south traffic
on that major throughfare who sees it will be thinking. "Mom, what's a AMC?"

I have driven nothing BUT American Motors cars since got my license in 1976.
And still do, my current daily drivers are a 81 Eagle wagon, factory 4x4
4cylinder 4speed that while it lacks in power, the gas mileage it gets is
above 20mpg.

Another daily driver is my white 82 Eagle custom wagon.
http://epage.com/js/mi/c0/1853682.html
And as mentioned above, after running chores down Westheimer, "the strip" in
Houston, earlier today in 'Bessie' the 72 Ambassador SST wagon
http://epage.com/js/mi/n0/1392356.html I don't really see what the big deal
is. There is millions of vehicles in Houston, Texas. There are only 220
'registered' street legal AMC vehicles registered in Harris county out of
billions.

Not a lot of daily driver anything AMC out there anymore. For what it is
worth, there were billions of Ford and Chevy products made in the 60s/70s
but few of them driven daily in 2006. As for creature comforts, I agree with
Frank, you can easily moderize any AMC product for daily driving and
comfort. A 1940s vehicle won't handle/drive like a 1950s, which won't handle
or drive like a 60s, and so on and so on. I rented a Ford Focus almost a
year ago and was impressed with it's agility, pickup for having a three
gerbil engine, and gas mileage. Woudl I buy one? No. I would lat Paige buy
one so I keep my streak going I guess at 326 AMCs.....

Happy American Motoring,
