Gary, what does the end on your speedo cable look like? AMC used two that I can think of. The early one (Borg Warner trans) used a round "plug" about an inch in diameter with the cable centered in it. The end was made onto the cable. 1972 and later TF trans used a larger, maybe 1.5" diameter hole in the trans, but that was for the gear carrier (or adapter if you want to call it that). The cable had a small screw on end about the same size as the speedo end. To check the speedo head, pull the cable from the trans and chuck the end in a reversible drill. Spin it up, and if you get nothing, reverse it. What year car are you working with? pre 63 speedos turned one direction (but includes 63 American), 63+ the other. Make sure the inner cable is long enough and seated. That can sometimes be a problem. The compressor mount depends on the year of the engine and intake manifold. Check the engine code number for year. Assuming the manifolds haven't been changed, get the same year mounts. Factory mounts should be easy enough to come by, but you'll need a York to Sanden conversion mount. Those can be purchased from any A/C shop, it's a popular swap. The Sanden takes much less room and power than the old York. I'd only use a York in a restoration. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) -----original message---------------------------- From: "Gary L. Speedo reverser, AC install To: <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <001301c6d911$596b8d50$6501a8c0@yourm5d4u9r2uv> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Some time ago Frank suggested that maybe the problem with my speedo was that it was being turned in reverse. I tend to believe it as I know the tranny is not original to the car, and the old cable had the tranny end hose clamped together. I always thought it was clamped because someone wanted to shorten it. I threw away the old cable. I have a new cable, it went in just fine, but neither of the heads that I have seem to work. Does anyone have any more thoughts on this and or some parts for sale? Also, I purchased an under dash AC system for this car. I think I am going to have to find a way to mount the Power steering pump elswhere, as I think the compressor goes where it is. This is the 232 motor. Does anyone have any thoughts and or parts for sale concerning this? Thank everyone for all their help with this, and in the past!
