Here's a tough one to figure out:
The 74 AMX that I bought from Fred Phillip's collection was built in August 1974 and has the "urban legend" steel hood.
I am trying to determine how rare a genuwine steel hood 74 AMX is.
Out of the 4980 built in 1974, how many would you estimate were built from Aug-Nov 1974?
Thanks,

A: I shipped a Grand Wagoneer tailgate to Noo Joisey. It arrived in unusable
condition and unceremoniously returned and dumped on my front lawn without
the slightest hint of why. I was lucky to be home and catch the driver who
THREW it over my fence! ( I heard the thump and came out to investigate)
There was a tire track across the package that I found out came from the
truck of the driver in Jersey. Same driver had been fined by the company
previously for DRAGGING a genuine Leonardo Da Vinci bust on pedestal across
the street and LEAVING it on the sidewalk rather than pull into their more
than adequate size parking lot! (same company restored art) He caused
$50,000 damage to the bust and nearly wiped out one of Leonardo's works
permanently.
Took me a long time to get the money out of UPS (in the meantime I had to
refund the seller's money) Granted that's the only problem I've had with UPS
other than them taking apart a crate I built for a 727 trans (they tried to
claim in Texas that the package was over the weight limit by 50 lbs, but I
used the UPS scale in Seattle to weigh it and had the slip to prove it. They
tried to bill me for 3 shipping pieces but that didn't fly either)

I'm still 'doin a Nose Job & have a hood
I need to get home from Oakdale CT. 06370

The drive is some 3+ hours being 6 round trip

I have shipped a hood via Greyhound before. Covered it in cardboard
sent it halfway across country for 55 dollars. Had to be picked up at
the terminal.

Well, don't laugh but I have used Greyhound package
express to ship one Gremlin door and two Rambler
Classic fenders to separate buyers in the last few
months. All items arrived OK, but I had to do the
work to package them correctly. I used hot water pipe
insulation foam for all the sharp edges and covered
the flat surfaces with cardboard bound by copious
amounts of packing tape or duct tape. Gonna be
shipping a Javelin door this week the same way.
I think a Gremlin hood will meet the dimension limits
of Greyhound, but to be sure, go to their website and
check the info there. The buyer has to be willing to
pick up the item at the arriving terminal.
I have used DHL, which has more generous dimension
limits to ship a front clip which was about seven feet
long, packaged. It was more of a hassle (finding a
terminal etc.) but the package arrived safely.

Brian, if it is that close to you, it would be in best interest to go pick
it up. I shipped a 70 Javelin hood from Houston to Los Angeles a few months
ago, and shipping was $480. The company would later reduce it to around $200
as the buyer, who paid shipping costs, was a good customer. Regardless, with
fuel prices high, many shippers are tacking 'fuel surcharges' onto larger
items like hoods, fenders, and what not. I just sent a pair of fenders, this
time by FedEx up to Rick Johnson in MA, shipping was $93 for the set, not
bad, and I used a furniture box.
If you have any furniture places in your area, or exexcise equipment places
near you, go dig thru trash as you will find some really good sturdy boxes.
On the hood, I used bubble wrap around all corners, and places thin foam on
front outside of hood. Then I cut the box to fit the hood, using lots of
tape, so it conforms to the hood itself. Never have had one damaged.
Possibly cheapest way to ship it is FedEx, then UPS. Greyhoud is a
possibility but a pain in the ass. Good luck,

Thsnks Frank for the list. And as Stu asked:
Frank
I assume you have US only info here?
Otherwise there would be Argentinean Torino
And Australian
Rambler Javelins
Rambler Hornets
& Rambler Matadors
Maybe Mexican names as well
Oh Yeah the American in Iran was a Shaheen
I have a NOS nametag for one of them :)
Stu
Without going off topic, maybe that American in Iran the nameplates would
now be called Infidel? I would like a nameplate for that! On the Mexican
cars, you had all sorts of them like Lerma, Llanero, Rallye, American, AMX,
to name a few that come to mind. Here are two sites, one is Bob Wilson's on
Arcticboy:
http://www.arcticboy.com/Pages/arcticboysvam.html
the other off my own site dealing with VAM:
http://www.clubramblermexico.8m.net/
and more on Argentina Torinos:
http://torino.s5.com/
Speaking of which, I have been trying to help a fellow AMcer in argentina
who has a 1981 Pacer, he needs a grill, taillights and front amber turn
lights also if anyone has them, look the same for all Pacers I guess.

Personally I don't see really anything wrong with the car except the
brand "X" engine. With a blown AMC 401 and some nice wheels and some
detailing it could be a nice car. The boy's at NAMDRA I am sure would
agree with me. Pacer's were never my thing but it is still a savable AMC
with the right engine. The chopped top is hardly noticeable and in my
opinion makes the car look less boxy.

It's sad what some people do to cars.
SNIP
At face value I don't see what is so sad about this. An enthusiast has
taken an AMC product as a base, modified it to his particular desires
and is offering it for sale at a price that is 4 times or better of what
a stock one would go for on e-bay.
Depending on what the rest of the car looks like it looks like a good
deal if you like bazaar street racers.
Seems to me this type of thing at this time may deserve stepping back
and taking another good look as to re-evaluating the benefits of
expanding out the definition of an AMC hobby!
If I had to guess on this one there stands a good chance he will get his
money out of it.

I wouldn't want the Engine - way too 'Old School' 'jimmy' blower
can't see a thing lump - I'd find a lighter 'healthy' something & a

I have been having some fun with the 63 Rambler
American hardtop this weekend. I need to get the car
running so it is easy to move in and out of my
driveway and would not be blocking other cars. In a
perfect world, this car can be a replacement daily
driver to replace the 1980 Spirit that I finally sold
last week.
I was intially surprised that the car ran when I
brought it home. The last license sticker was 1990
but that sticker was on new CA replacement plates
(which I found in the trunk) so I don't know if the
car was actually on the road in 1990. There appeared
to be fresh oil in the crankcase (amber color, not
black) and it had a new air cleaner element and new
tires all the way around. It ran but there was a
coolant leak in the "crossover" pipe which runs under
the exhaust manifold back to the heater core inlet on
the firewall. I had to block off that opening for
now, until I have time to remove the obstructions and
replace that pipe.
After getting it running, I found that the carb needs
a rebuild because of the faulty accelerator pump.
Friday I gave up on the existing WCD carburetor and
decided to use another spare WCD which was in the
trunk of the car, along with several other spare
parts. I had a little trouble removing the old carb
because the manifold studs were left almost too long
and getting access to the nuts was difficult on one
side. After degreasing the exterior of the
replacement carb yesterday and installing it, the car
started and ran better and most importantly it didn't
stall on acceleration like it did with the old carb.
I had ruined the carb to manifold gasket when I
installed the new carb so I made a new one out of
rather thin gasket paper. I could tell I had some
vacuum leaks at the end of the day, which prevented a
good smooth idle.
Today, I used some RTV around the base of the carb as
a temporary measure until I could make a better gasket
and I reset the idle mixture to account for the better
vacuum. The result was a factory smooth steady idle.
Next step was to try to feed gas from the gas tank
instead of an auxilliary can. I put a few gallons of
gas in the tank along with some carb cleaner and found
out the fuel pump would not deliver fuel from the
tank. So I emptied the gas tank of the old gas and
dropped it down to have a look. Lots of varnish but
not much rust, from what I can see. The sender unit
was all gunked up and had no sock filter on the end,
allowing the suction pipe to be full of old varnish
and dirt. I have a replacement sender unit (also from
the trunk of that car) and plan to put it in tomorrow
after cleaning the tank. Hope to be on the road by
tomorrow at noon.
I always enjoy waking one of these old cars from the
dead, and this one has been fun so far to work with.
I did spot some corrosion in the unibody structure
almost directly underneath the front suspension. I
think the area can be patched fairly easily. If I get
it running dependably tomorrow I'll start cleaning the
interior and other appearance items.
