Seems someone torpedoed their auction: ================================ Hi there. I just wanted to give you some information about the AMC Rambler auction you were inquiring about. Someone broke into our account and edited the description to commit fraud on the auction. We are very sorry that this happened. We have resolved all problems with this and have created a new auction for the car. It is listed as item #330021373417 and it is now completely safe to bid on this item again if you so wish. Again, we are very sorry this happened but it was really out of our control. Ebay was very helpful and helped us to resolve this issue but we had to relist the item. ================================== I didn't bid on it, however had emailed them directly. Ironically, if you look closely, the word prototype is absent from the new listing, except in the blog link itself. Why? My bad -- the host machine was moved, and I neglected to restart the webserver (requires password entry). A coworker and I were standing in the parking lot looking at it when another customer pulled in. He started walking towards us and Mike started "puffing up" getting ready to tell the guy all about his Corvette when suddenly the guy asks "Hey, who owns the AMC Eagle over there". I told him it was mine and he said "Man, that is a cool car. I love that car. The 'Vette is ok but I want to own one of those Eagles". At this point Mike got in his Car and slammed the door and started to leave. He made it very clear that he wasn't happy about this other guy saying his Corvette was "OK" and then oohing and aahhing over my Eagle. What led them to believe it was a pre-production or prototype was the 1963 date on the build sheet. After viewing a couple build sheets recently it's obvious that AMC made some orders 18-24 months in advance. This makes sense -- the company has to have cars ready for dealers when they come out, and the factory needs build sheets well in advance so they know what parts to have ready (and to order). So the process has to start that far in advance. Once everything is set up and running it wouldn't take to long to build a few more cars as orders came in. The serial or last six numbers of a VIN indicate what sequence the car was ordered in. An AMX build sheet on Eddies site has a date two years before the car (67 for a 69, I believe). The "prototype" remarks come from that date, and I suppose is a reasonable assumption not knowing how the factory operated. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at first, but my request for a photo of the serial number and door tags were ignored. I told them specifically that I'd been asked about authenticating the car as a possible prototype or pre-production model, and signed the e-mail as editor of AIM. I'm pretty convinced it's just a nice convertible. Still, a nice mid 60s AMC V-8 convertible should be worth $12K or so. Price a Chevy or Ford mid size convertible in as good a condition. You'll get more looks with the AMC too! ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 06:26:57 -0400 From: AMC74Hornet@xxxxxxxxx (Mr. AMC) Subject: Re: [AMC-List] AMC Eagle Better Than a Corvette To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <23388-44ED7EF1-1225@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Jamie you are just experiencing what is happening to more and more AMC owners in the last few years. Everyone is getting tired of all those ho hum cookie cutter cars. Unique cars are in now. You see one Camero, Chevelle or Mustang and you have seen them all and that goes for the ricers too. I had a similar situation when I first bought my orange Hornet Hatchback a few years back. The car was un-washed as I had just put it on the road 3 days before I attended my first cruise with it. The Western turbine wheels were grungy, the tires bald and the paint was dull and oxidized, the interior was torn and the plastic was warped, pieces missing and in just horrible condition. It was real survivor car neglected by it's previous owner for the whole 4 years he had it. I was parked between a mint 69 Chevelle SS 396 and a beautiful 6-71 blown BB 427 in a 39 Chevy coupe. The Hornet got more attention than either car and the owner of the Chevelle was definitely not happy when people walked passed his chevelle to look at the Hornet. Now after working on the car for 3 years I can't go anywhere with out the car getting all sorts of attention. The original paint is polished out, the tires are BFG T/A radials and the wheels detailed and it has a completely new interior. I haven't been to the cruise that the Chevelle owner attends regularly yet but I plan to soon and park next to him. :-) ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 03:41:58 -0700 (PDT) From: eddie walker <moparedwalker@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] survivor vintage/ versus restored old girlfriend, To: mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <20060824104158.27224.qmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I picked up my girlfriend on Friday night, it was summer the year of our Lord 1973. What to do, what to do? Go cruising like most other Friday nights and end up at our usual make out spot? Hey, I have an idea, lets take the Hornet down to the shop, pull the engine and clean the engine compartment! You ready to get dirty? She agreed and sat patiently on the parts counter while I pulled out the 304 w/Ford FMX attached. I cleaned the engine/trans while she cleaned the compartment. We took a couple breaks, but I had her home by midnight and the Hornet had a sparkling engine, fresh coat of satin black where I thought it looked best and the engine compartment hadn't been that clean since I had purchased the car. I had a girlfriend like that. I was dating 4 girls and had decided to break it off with three and concentrate on one.. Roxanne was not the one, however before I could break it off with her, she took her savings ($2500.00.She made $6.00 an hour then and it took her all summer) and bought me a car that I casually mentioned that I would buy if I had the money. She spent the next 4 days detailing tht car and presented it to me. I was floored. I also realized that she would be a much better girlfriend. Well after 16 years of marriage and 5 kids, she still surprises me with her generosity (1977 Matador from Arizona that was delivered last week). She still goes junkyard walking with me and allows me my car crazy ways. She has been a perfect wife. I think that girlfriend was just such a catch...I hope she found a car nut.....eddie walker. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo!
