I had the same experience a few years ago at a banquet
dinner for a car club that I belong to. One guy, when
he found out I collect Ramblers, told me his sister
had a '65 Classic with a "Chevy 327 in it." I told
him that it was an AMC engine, looked nothing like a
Chevy, and he got really huffy about it, even though I
told him in a nice way!
And recently my father in law, who had a '63 American,
INSISTED in that particular way that only in-laws can,
that the car had a Dodge engine in it.
And my mechanic friend still insists that AMC bought
"left-over" parts from the Big Three and put them on
their cars. He just doesn't buy it when I tell him
that they just out-sourced manufacturing of various
engine components.
Maybe it's best to just bite your tongue and take
solace in knowing that you know your stuff . .

I have an ironic tale to spin about educating about
AMC's.. I recently
met an older fellow with a 64 American 'vert.. He is
insistant that
the 232 engine he has in it is made by Chevy. "That
old 190 something
was a piece of trash, I love that AMC put these chevy
232's in starting
1964"... I really dont know how to correct him, or if
I should..
respecting elders and all.... I cringe when I think
about him
spreading this info to others though....
