I'm sure that little gas-sipper would be an excellent commuter car, and I could drive/enjoy it while I'm trying to get my other stuff ready to roll. No takers, at $500 so I may donate it to charity when I return from Speed Week in Utah next week. Sad. The 63 Classic wagon I picked up in Nevada last month is in paid storage here in town. Gotta bring it home when there's room for it. My 77 Gremlin X is still waiting for a carburetor and for the seats to be done, then I must order carpet for it. My 73 Javelin 304/auto which has fresh paint, new vinyl top, carpet and seats will be for sale later this month. I'm just not enjoying this car. I'm picking up a 69 Javelin from the central valley later this month. It will be for sale locally and will go on Ebay if it doesn't sell right away. I'm parting out a 77 AMX 304/auto. Lots of parts are still available, but crossmember, rear end and motor plates are spoken for (me). I need to bring home a 63 440 hardtop I purchased last month. There is more, but I won't bore you. He is insistant that the 232 engine he has in it is made by Chevy. SNIP Naw! He is relating to the GM distributor used, ergo it must be a Chebbie. This really gets interesting when the 390 with the Chebbie distributor and the Ford Carburetor tries to get identified, but it works out good in 1971 when the 401 is the same displacement as the Chebbie 396 as produced that year. It really gets the GM crowd teary eyed when they discover that their infamous 396's were actually made by AMC. I just show them how the distributor parts interchange and they begin to gnash their teeth and moan a lot. As far as Methuselah and his memory lapse, well two choices. You can try to educate him, probably a lost cause OR just explain to him that he is mistaken, it was actually purchased from British Leyland as part of a lend lease program and originally powered a Nuffield Tractor. If you can do it with a straight face that should do the trick Remember, two can play that game! Respecting elders (hey, I'm almost 66 and have made a lot of mistakes over the years and don't mind when I am corrected and it is proven to me the person making the correction is correct!) has nothing to do with correcting elders. Of course, if the elder doesn't want to listen, it is his goof. Some old guys just don't want too -- especially from a younger man. Of course some younger guys don't either. On hotrodders.com some kid came on insisting that his Nova had 5x4.5" wheels. Even when a coup[le people politely told him of his error, he still insisted, though he did add that maybe he was measuring wrong (nice of him!). When someone posted how to measure he had nothing else to say, so he must have! But the point is he posted that the Nova had the pattern after a couple people had already stated that Chevy wheels wouldn't fit (of course I pointed out that everyone forgets about AMC!!). I doubt "your" guy gets out to many AMC shows, or any shows. So I doubt he'll be doing much harm. I once told an old guy that I didn't want to buy a Fairlane I went to see. He still insisted on trying to sell me the car, that it was in perfect mechanical condition except for a burnt valve, and had been babied all it's life. I finally stated that something had to cause the burnt valve. At that point he got mad and told me to leave, while walking swiftly for his truck. We were out in the country, and though I was a kid (18 or 19) at the time, I grew up out that way too! I seriously thought the guy was going for a shotgun!! He had a limp -- turns out he was going for his cane, apparently thinking he was going to give us (I had a friend with me about the same age) a thrashing for being disrespectful, though I had been polite up to that point. It really ticked me off at the time that the old guy thought he was going to strike me with a cane, but we had already made it to the car and started backing out. My buddy thought the same as I and wanted to run for the car, but I grabbed him and told him we were NOT going to run from the old geezer, we hadn't done anything wrong, and I wasn't going to let him think he'd intimidated us -- which he had been trying to do the whole course of the "sale". I doubt "your" old guy will want to take a cane to you for doubting his word, but he might... ;> ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2006 17:57:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] What To Do?
