Would prefer a 4-spd RWB car but would consider anything. Not afraid of something needing work but would like everything that is Machine special to be there if at all possible. The closer you are to North Dakota, the better. To give you an idea of my budget, I am not trying to steal something for $5K but the $40K Rhode Island Red's are a bit out of my league. The black is satin black. You can see some good pictures of a perfect 1968 grille at http://www.mattsoldcars.com/gallery/EdmundAnderson2004/low_mile_american/index.shtml. You can see a so-so SC/Rambler grille at http://www.mattsoldcars.com/gallery/teague97.shtml (near the bottom). These pictures are not all that good but you can clearly see that it's not like the 1967 grille. I've always been a admirer of AMC cars, and one of my most painful experiences was the sale of our Big Bad Green AMX in the summer of 1976. I don't recall the purchaser's name, but he was headed to Princeton, New Jersey for college from Tacoma, Washington. I've seen numerous pictures on the net of BBG AMX's and always wondered if one of them could be "MY BABY". The car was had a rather unusual set of options. It was a 390 with Go Pac, four speed, 3.54 posi rear end. The weird thing is that it came with vacuum wipers and manual steering. It had charcoal woven vinyl upholstery, a standard AM radio, and dash plaque #10248. It came with the Magnum wheels and trim rings. The wheels were subsequently replaced with Ansen 14x6 dished aluminum wheels. I had installed an Addco rear sway bar, an Accel dual point distributor, Holley 600cfm carb, Hooker headers and a Sig Erson cam. I had fabricated and installed a sheetmetal spoiler to the front of the car. I would hope that the current owner has had the good sense to correct my indiscretions. One thing that I truly regret is that I drilled the hood to install locking hood pins. The car was purchased in Manatowoc (sp?), New Jersey in September, 1969. I suspect that it was a special order car intend to be drag raced and the deal fell through. I can't imagine a dealer flooring a car like that intentionally. If there is anyone out there in AMC land that knows the whereabouts of this car, I would love to hear from them. I know I have the VIN somewhere, but there is 30 years of water under the bridge! I assure that my intentions are pure. I simply want to know how she has weathered the storm. Thanks for listening to my rambling. To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY113-F13C9DC72BCF588D106DBAFC5B0@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed I'm having a mid-life car crisis. The 69 wagon is doing a great job making trips back and forth as I move from the hot valley north of LA to a smaller place in cool Culver City. Today I started packing up parts in the 100 degree garage . It's amazing how much stuff one can accumulate in almost six years. I have one box labeled "Parts for cars I do not own." And maybe it's just the heat but the idea of de-Ramblering continues to nag at me. Ten years ago I was looking at replacing a 68 American with a newer car when I ordered a TSM, and started tinkering instead. I now have 3 Americans and a 59 Met, boxes of parts, and more on the car to-do list than can be accomplished by me in a lifetime. I've learned a lot and it is definitely part of who I am, but I need to get back down to one car for this city life. And if it is to be one it should be the Met, because it fits, saves gas, and I don't have to maintain my own parts department. And if I only have one car to focus my attention on rather than spreading it over four or sometimes five. . . it might actually wind up looking good. Right now the cars are feeling more like a burden than a joy, and I wonder how different my life would have been. . . But it may just be the heat and moving all these parts. Anyway I may be looking to find good homes for one or more of the following Rambler Americans: 65 2dr 68 2dr 69 wagon. And some boxes of parts. In Los Angeles. I'll have more info soon. Another Webtver! (that's what I started out on this list with in fall of '96 when they first came out) As for the Eagle, it could be a number of problems. Some big, some small and some a PITA. First, make sure the rear (or front if it's in 4x4) driveshaft isn't spinning w/o the car moving (which means the 2 piece axle stripped or spider gears broke) Model 15 rear axle. Swap in an XJ D35 or upgrade to a D44 axle. You'll need to fix the shock mounts but the 1 piece axles are a nice upgrade! If that's not it, the '85 was last year of the %$@#^&* vacuum front axle so make sure it's in 2WD and the tcase isn't 1/2 way to 4x4 (the vacuum motors tend to stick and replacing at least the one on the front axle with a manual cable or perma locking it and rerouting the vacuum hoses to go to just the tcase shift motor (see a diagram for '86 to '88 to see how to make yours shift on the fly) Once you ensure the tcase is in 2wd, pop the drain plug and see if black gritty oil comes out (that would be a blown viscous coupler. No holes in the tcase? (I have seen ones blown apart when the chain let go after being stretched too far) Once you eliminate the other stuff (by the way, the trans will shift and you'll feel it if the trans isn't wiped out. It will often grind when you shift to park too) Check the torque converter bolts didn't fall out. If it was vibrating a bit, the front pump or the converter may have died. A VERY nice upgrade for the Eagles with automatic is the 727 from an '80 to '91 Grand Wagoneers (easy to spot in the junkyard because the front driveshaft is driver's side, same as the Eagle). Much stronger than the 998 (especially in the torque converter dept and load haulling and a direct bolt in with very minor parts swapping from the old one) The FSJ transfercase is also a nice upgrade with low range. For those who tow seriously, a NP208J (available as an option '80 to '88) is the strongest. It was driving /shifting fine. I parked it one day, then got in and drove off and stopped to check my mail. IT will not move now. I can jack it up and it will roll the wheels but will not shift. I checked the fluid it is good and clean. I dropped the pan changed the filter ,same problem. Any suggesions??? Could there be an easy fix.?? Never any signs of going bad!! Thanks in advance. Also I am looking for f&r bumpers and a right frot fender for a 65' American 330?? _________________________________________________________________ Don?t just search. Find.
