Not AMC related except there have been 2-4 AMC Art Cars, most notable Joe
Ficht's Musical Matador, one was a 75 four door, the other a 74 coupe. Here
is a Edsel that was close to ending up a Coke can like so many AMCs and
others do nowdays. Shows while not everyone wants to have stock this and
that, you can however have a lot of fun with your creation, and also save a
old car in the process. Enjoy!

Hello AMC fans, I'm looking for more info i have gotten some good advice
from Jim Blair thanks Jim. I searching for all possibilities that will work.
I have a project started I'm learning as i go i have a 68 javelin sst. I
have a 1970 390-V8 complete except intake that needs to be rebuilt. I have a
290-V8 with automatic transmission I don't know the condition of the tranny.
I just bought a 1980 j-10 jeep 360-V8 4x4 727 automatic tranny. Here's my
question since this is a 4x4 trany is there different methods or needs to
installing it in my 68 javelin. If it's going to be a headache I'd like to
use the automatic trany off the 290 what will i need to do to make it work?
I have never used headers that were on the 360 dog leg heads it fit good in
the jeep but wont fit in the javelin. So i will sell or trade for headers
that will work correctly in my javelin. My javelin has no say bar to get in
the way of the headers I'm considering selling the 390 also there not cheap
and getting harder to find. Thank you AMC fans anymore info will be
appreciated thanks Ed thanks for the use of your great AMC site Harold

Some of ya'l might want to save this, not that there is a lot of anything
AMC in most junkyards anymore, but some like John's in Seguin, and CTC in
Sanger do have 20+ Ramblers & AMCs still, so here is a master list:

is the 290 a 2bbl or 4bbl motor? is the auto with it aluminum or iron
case?

the aluminum auto is at its outer limit coping with a 2bbl 290 in a
light car. it can be built [by someone who knows them - both amc and
import versions - backwards and forwards] to handle a 4bbl 290 or 304,
but that's -it-. forget about putting it behind a 360.

if it's an iron auto, it's strong enough for a 401. you'll need a
'70-1 360 flexplate at least, to put it on the jeep motor. it's
getting harder to find tranny shops that know what these are, though
ford used a relative through the '70s.

the 727 can be swapped back to 2wd with only a few parts, but one of
them is the tailshaft and that means a fairly complete teardown. i
don't know of any other way to use it.

A: If you score a lockup version of the 727, the mileage drop will be
minimal on the hwy. The '80 to '83 Cherokee also came with 999 as an option
behind the 6 cyl (you can tell which is which by the pan shape) The 32RE
(and probablt 32RH as well) have weak lockup converters. I have 3 in my pile
of cores that suddenly quit making the Jeep/Eagle/Concord move. Often just
as they pulled to a stop. I stripped the trannies down and there wasn't even
more than a smudge of grit in the pans.
Last one I pulled the pan on, found nothing obvious inside and I just put
another converter in to make it go again. She's still driving that '79
Concord AFAIK. She has my phone number should she ever decide to sell it
(one owner with only 30,000 miles when I fixed the trans)

"
"
" A VERY nice upgrade for the Eagles with automatic is the
727 from an '80
" to '91 Grand Wagoneers (easy to spot in the junkyard because
the front
" driveshaft is driver's side, same as the Eagle). Much stronger
than the 998
" (especially in the torque converter dept and load haulling and
a direct bolt
" in with very minor parts swapping from the old one)

it will cost you mileage though. the 727 takes almost twice as
much
hp to spin as the 998.

a jeep wrangler tf999 aka 32rh [-not- 32re!] is also stronger in
the
converter area and should be a drop-in if the 727 is.
