Did they ever work right? If not, they are almost certainly wired wrong. Besides the big post on the alt that goes to the battery, the two on the plug on the side of the alt are: * dash ALT light + 'turn alternator on now' * sense wire 'alt measures actual battery voltage' The ALT light is wired switched ignition --> ALT light --> alternator terminal When the ignition is turned on, current runs through the ALT light (idiot light) into the guts of the alt and into the field to start the alternator. No lamp, or severely wrong lamp (note1) alt wont start. The sense wire measures the battery voltage and compensates for voltage drop in the wiring etc so that the alt puts 14.4V on the battery regardless. NOTE1: I have an LED lamp replacement in my dash; it doesn't draw enoug current to start the alt below 1500 rpm, but it reliably does once I've revved it. I'm goin to fix it "real soon now" :-) ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 06:38:10 -0400 From: AMC74Hornet@xxxxxxxxx (Mr. AMC) Subject: [AMC-List] Hornet Update (Gas Tank) To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <1352-44C89792-8782@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Jack from personal experience don't waste your time and money on one of those gas tank sealer kits. Have it professionally repaired. I put the newer 21 gallon tank in both my 74 Hornets. It is still available new as it was also in the Eagle wagon's and 4 door sedan's. It was the same size but just deeper so with new gas tank straps it was almost a bolt in with only minor mods needed to hook up the fuel lines and vent line to the roll over valve. A new fuel tank sending ring and gasket ("O" Ring) is also available over the counter too. The sending unit itself I had to get a NOS one from Kennedy American. On the rear noise I think all the AMC rears of the era were set up loose and made noise even when new. If you are gong to change the pinion bearings also change the ring gear carrier bearings and wheel bearings. I started with a billet radiator over flow tank. I modified the filler cap neck ramps so the cap would open easily without having to push down with excessive force to clear the locks. I also removed the overflow gasket from the cap so the tank is now vented. I am also in the process of removing 1/32" of material from the top of the billet cap to remove the mfg's machined in logo. In order to get the socket in through the filler neck to install the nut for the pump I had to grind the inside of the filler neck for clearance. There was plenty of material but not where it was welded to the tank. The neck separated from the tank. I used JB Weld and re-installed the neck. I roughed up the mating surfaces and now that it is dry it is like it was welded on again. Love that JB Weld. Next I have to open up the hole in the bottom of the tank so the pump will fit. Aluminum is a pain to work with as it filles up your grinding stones and rotary files surfaces. I have to make a trip to Sears this morning for some more supplies for my Dremil. Once all the mods to the tank and cap are done I will have to polish it out. It may seem like an excessive amount or work but that old crappy looking plastic tank looked horrible next to the polished billet radiator over flow tank. It also wasent cheap either as it was 146$ for the tank including shipping from Jeggs.
