The Model 15 was still being used in the Eagle, but the XJs got D35C in '84 at beginning of production (one piece shafts). I have pics of the D35C casting in the housing of an '88 Eagle as well! Bronco IIs ran a D35 IFS in the front. The D44 became available in '87 as HD option in MJ and XJ. M20 (I'm still looking for one!) was available '84 thru '86 (so only 1 year in MJs!) '91 was a split year of D44 and 8.25. The D53 was used in J4000s till '69, then they went to D60 semi-float till '74. My '73 J4000 was one of the last semi-floats, then they went full float. My J4000 is also getting a 727 (from a newer than '80 FSJ) with Mopar NP208 so it's still RH drop. It was a button up job with the later crossbar. I have to change my exhaust manifolds anyways, so I'll use the later crossover pipe. From: adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Sandwich Maker) Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Brought home a Vigilante over the weekend... quick history lesson - the d35 didn't even exist until amc turned amc15 axle production over to dana about '87. axle shafts are different but the 'chuck' is the same. only uses for the d35 are xj/yj/zj/etc rears and ford exploder fronts. exploders also used d30 fronts. early xjs used a hd amc15, with amc20 optional. the amc20 was replaced by a d44 for a few years, then a mopar 8.25" starting in the early '90s. on big jeeps, i didn't think the d53 survived into the '60s, but i'm not an expert. the d27 replaced the d25 in the late '40s. it evolved into the d30 in the late '60s. the d44 existed at least since the late '40s, the d60 since some time in the '50s. the d70 might be that old as well. all have front and rear versions; d30, d44, and d60 have high pinion fronts. both d44 and d60 have evolved, principally in spline count and from closed to open knuckles. never heard of a d53 front. 27s and 44s were also made in england; volvo used spicer 27s starting with the 444. the famous jag irs used a spicer 44 chuck; jag posis used to be the hot setup as they were beefier than the american d44 ones. " knwoing that they used Dana 30's and if your uncomfortable with the " 44's i mentioned ok how bout a 3/4 ton running gear Dana 60 front and " rear with the flipped shackles and a Dana 300 or NP 205 transfer case? that was my thought - a j30 d60 rear + a custom high pinion d60fa. " Also while I agree about using a more reliable engine/trans combo " whats so bad about the AMC 327? i thought in 4v form they were tough " motors. I see traditional hot rodders revamping flatties and Ford guys " running tried and true Y block V8's myself included with my 60 Effie. very tough but maybe the big jeeper wants more power? ________________________________________________________________________ Andrew Hay the genius nature internet rambler is to see what all have seen adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and think what none thought _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! First, a 4 speed would cure the ratio ills, or you could mod the D20 with Early Bronco stuff to 3.15 low range. Chev military rigs used HPD60 front axles that are RH drop '84 till '87. Jeep M715 used D60 front and D70 rear (and they are already SOA with high steer stock) From: msproviero@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Brought home a Vigilante over the weekend... To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: Every wheeler has a different philosophy. Its not the motor that I would question - I bought it because I knew it was stout and has a very nice factory torque rating for its displacement. The D20 is fine also. The issues with wheeling the Waggie I bought would be the crappy 1st gear ratio of the 3-speed, not being worth it to regear the weak axles to compensate for the trans ratios, no front discs, weak knuckles, weak u-joints everywhere, its difficult-to-work-with suspension that really ends up requiring SOA and extra axle work in the form of high-steer, and the unfriendly-to-wheeling interior (benches). The ratio of time/effort/money to results/enjoyment is skewed the wrong way for me on this one. Making the assumption that the motor would be pumped up and a suitable trans installed, I still wouldn't want to wheel such a large rig on modern 44's either due to the torque multiplication of say, an adapted T-18a/D300 (or something stronger), and the significant weight of the vehicle going through small joints and rather thin, 30-spline shafts. I might feel better with a C20HD rear than I would with a D44 rear. A HP D44 or D60 front would require a transfer case other than what you suggested due to the driver's side drop and I have never seen a HP passenger-drop D60 that hadn't been re-tubed. I wouldn't bother building up a passenger-drop LPD60 unless the vehicle came with it or it was nearly free, but only becuase of the axle resources I have at my disposal with the number of junkyards, message boards, and email lists in Michigan... I've also got 3 other vehicles to wheel, so its not really a priority. If it was my only vehicle and I wanted a FSJ to wheel, a newer one would have been a better choice. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Pretty similar design to Mopar big block. From: Frank Swygert <farna@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Brought home a Vigilante over the weekend... To: amcrelay@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: There's only two things "wrong" with an AMC 327 (or any GEN-1 V-8): 1. No speed parts. The only thing you can easily do is improve the exhaust system and air filter. The factory 4V intake takes a Holley carb, so a carb upgrade is pretty easy, and the stock units are only like 450 or so cfm -- a 600 cfm would be nice! Later AMC aluminum intakes can be adapted, but adapter paltes have to be made. It's not to hard to have a stock cam reground either, but that's about it for easy -- if you consider changing a cam "easy". 2. When the water pump goes out on a trail, you'd better have a spare! They are still obtainable, but you're going to be stuck a few days, maybe even a week, while one is ordered. Same for other hard parts. The only things you can walk into any auto parts store and get are tune-up parts, belts, and hoses -- provided you don't mind using universal hoses. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Stuff like that is a pain in the ass to replace if it breaks because you have to waste time to go looking for it. The likelihood of another D300 being available among wheelers for about $150 is fairly high. I have Drill this weekend, so I will ask around the motor pool about the military axles. Not worth it to bother with the ancient tech in M-715 axles unless you have one. They have closed knuckles and other weak steering parts that I would be wary of, as well as old drum brakes. That would all have to be replaced, as well as the knuckles themselves. I don't know if those old D70's were even 35-spline. Did all D70's have 2-piece carriers like the old ones? -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> > Where to start on this one? LOL!
