I just had a NOS fuel sending unit installed on my Gremlin and the mechanic at the time insisted I find a new sock for it. I spoke with Jim Robertson up here who supplies many AMC parts and he told me to abandon the idea of the sock and replace it with a GOOD inline fuel filter. Replace the filter every 5 years or so (his words). He has not had a problem with any replacements to date, so that is what I did, seems to be ok for now.
