Russ, it doesn't matter about the brake line routing. The combo valve (CV) and right brake gets the same pressure as the left brake even though the left brake is closer to the master cylinder (MC). The line pressure is equal throughout the system, so it doesn't affect braking at all. If either front brake blows a line or seal the CV will shut off that side, but there will still be no front brakes as no pressure would be applied to them. There is one danger -- if the right front brake blows out and the CV trips, you will still have a left front brake since it "T"s out between the MC and CV. That would lead to a very hard pull to the left when braking. But the CV's main purpose is to warn that there is a brakes failure, and a smart person doesn't drive a car with failed brakes. You don't HAVE to have a warning light, the car will run without it. But then there's no warning if you have a problem. You can run the disc brakes off the drum brake junction block and warning light with no problem. You should install a proportioning valve in the rear brake line though. The CV has a proportioning valve built into it (thus the name "combination valve" -- it combines junction block, warning light, and proportioing in on unit). You can use the Hornet/AMX combo valve in the American also. ------ original message ------------------- Date: Thursday, June 22, 2006 02:01 PM From: russ hathaway <russh97309@xxxxxxxxx> My question is about the plumbing of the brake lines. Every AMC I see has the drivers front brake line branched off before the line goes to the balance valve. Then after the valve the passenger front brake gets pressure. Doesn't it make sense to run both lines from the MC to the balance valve, then branch off to the L/R front? I realize that it would involve more lines, but it seems better braking would be the result. Also, since these brakes (77 AMX disc/drum) are going on a 64 American, can I run the stop light switch from the front brake coupler, the afore mentioned coupler. Then just branch off after the balance valve to go to the discs? Do I need that warning light set-up on the balance valve or can I yank it out and toss it, then just plug up the hole. _______________________________________________ AMC-List mailing list AMC-List@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list or go to http://www.amc-list.com
