Yesterday I put the grill back in the jig and started to sand the areas
to be painted silver. Hopefully today I will complete the sanding and
clean it up so I can start the masking. That should take me a good
couple of days. It is raining now and will rain all weekend. I hope to
paint the silver tuesday or wednesday at the latest. The grill alone
painted flat black looks really nice like the 77 Hornet AMX, but I like
the silver accents on it better as it was stock in late 74. It is a 75
grill. It's a good thing I have a lot of patience as people have told me
they would just have painted it flat black and been done with it. :-)
Sorry not me.

Dave, on a four link (or even three link) rear axle setup both shocks on the same side of the axle (front or rear) is fine. The "staggered" shock arrangement usually has the right (passenger side) shock in front, left in rear. This is to help reduce wheel hop with a leaf spring axle that can wind up. The four or three bar can't wind up, so put both where they will fit best. You can center a bar right between the frame rails up top easily to mount the shocks. You want to mount the shocks at a slight angle (in at the top) and close to the ends of the axles for stability. Those close in are usually mounted that way for ultra wide tires.

Is the Wilwood master cylinder one with dual reservoirs or two single reservoir side by side? The side by side arrangement will be difficult to mount.

It doesn't matter if we're young or old; it doesn't matter if we're Ivy
League or School of Hard Knocks; doesn't matter if we're rich, poor, or

lives. Opportunities for self-improvement are endless 'til we draw our
final breath. If we don't make the most of the gifts we've been given,
if we don't take every opportunity to learn, we are, indeed, simply
fools.

So if '06 cars have grilles and '73 cars had grilles, what of '22 cars?

You may have guessed it: '22s had grilles too.

But did you guess which cars at the 12/21 NY show had relevance to AMC?

With Wills-St. Claire, Rickenbacker, Kelsey, Handley-Knight, Frontenac,
Durant, and Bournonville came an Ambassador. With neither a Nash badge
above nor a Morris body behind its radiator grille, but with a dream of
self-improvement, profit, and longevity: a uniquely -American- dream.
The one everyone once had.

Each of those American motor companies worked very hard to build dreams,

but they all went the way American Motors did. One of them, promoted as
"America's finest Knight-powered car," was, in fact, powered by the same
Willys that would become part of AMC. But, when it failed (in '23), it,
along with a plant that built the [Dort] bodies the young Charles Nash
had begun his car life by upholstering, led to another lost/last
independent auto company. The Handley plant became the new home of the
[ex-IL] Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in April, and on June 18, the
first [MI] car was built.

The year AMC bought Willys-Overland-Kaiser-Jeep, the founder of Checker
died, and on July 12, 1982, Checker Motors, itself, died when that last
lone car was built. The next year, American Motors' RWD-car dream died
too, but now the poor AMC fools don't know when that happened and where
that last car went. I'm as poor and foolish as any of them. I think
it's a disgrace. I think AMC is a lost cause. I think it's time to
give up.

Got a 1966 American 440 being restored and wondering if we can switch the front brakes to disc brakes. Can it be done? if so, how and what do we need? Also, looking for fender trim and top chrome trim for same 2 door coupe. Can use other parts too.

Good choice Dave, though I would select the AMC 20
with the rear disc conversion and a Pacer front end,
but thats me.
The 4x4 mags ran an article on the Ford rear end,
bullet proofing it to compete with the 9". I can't
remeber which one but one of the 4x4 mags (wasn't JP).....Russ

I pulled the heated rear window out of the Eagle
wagon, and you guessed right, the wires broke. Both
broken wires are braided. One wire is a ground so I
can contend with that OK. The other wire is the power
source, can I just soder a regular braided wire to
this stranded wire? There is a pull connector further
up the wire, so I figure it should be OK.
Will the doors fit onto my Hornet? I want to swap the
rusted doors on my 73 Hornet to these nice 85 Eagles
as I am getting them for next to nothing. Can these
power controls from the small doors be swapped over
onto the big doors when I switch over to a 2-dr wagon configuration......Russ

You can solder the wires, we did it many times back in the day, just be carefull not to get the glass too hot.
Two door power windows are different wiring harnesses and regulaters, IIRC. I just saw Two door SX/4 being parted that had Power Windows. I think it was listed on amcforum.

easy peasy - oughta be a faq! all amc front brakes swap if you
include the spindles. for disks, later is easier and cheaper for
parts, so look for an '82-3 concord or spirit first. get everything
brake-related you can from it, m/c, proportioning valve, etc.

some of these cars come with 10" rear brakes which you could use too,
but that's a tougher job and less important.

get the wheels too while you're at it. radials, even 185/75s which
would be stock equivalent for an american, are much happer on wide
rims than the skinny 4.5" stockers. and if you're real lucky the new
ones will still have hubcap bumps and you can snap your little
dogdishes on!

Hi Guys.........

.........Not a show car...just a rough driver /part time racer......

Well....don't know where the time has gone....after sitting in my shop
for the last five years or so, she made her first trip on the street
today. ..Runs really good....still have a lot of little things to do to
make her a regular street driver....thermostat housing gasket is
leaking....key switch turns in the dash...YUK..... may need a separate
starter switch....cover the hole in the tunnel...door panels...carpet..
and lots of other small stuff..but after sitting in my shop for so
long.... feels good just to get her out in the sun under her own
power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....

Still waiting to get the Gremlin out of the paint shop
again.....Grrrrrrrrr.......Monday maybe.....hope to have the old 360 back
together by then.....the 401 will have to wait for now........no money
to buy parts for awhile......

Regards,
Jim

Folks,

I have been in the St. Louis area for the last few
days and naturally I went to Fast Lane Cars in St.
Charles.

They have a 66 American 440 2-dr HT brown/brown
232/auto on the outside sales lot priced at $5995.
I suspect they are only brokering the car but did not
ask. It does appear to be a low mileage survivor that
has not spent many nights outside a garage, like it is
now.

They also have a full size Jeep Cherokee/wagoneer
which is clean, but I do not remember the price.

Lots of other nice cars too.
