Jerry,

Keep in mind that the patent proves nothing. A patent just means that he has
a unique design. It doesn't mean it works or meets his marketing claims. On
the surface this looks like a perpetual-motion-machine type of scam. He
seems to be claiming that he gets more energy out than he puts in. Time will
tell, I'm sure.

Later,

Todd

OK, I should've mentioned this was a standard tranny
application. I know many of us use the terms
interchangeably (sort of like 304 and 360 stuff!)
however, I always call a standard tranny a flywheel
and an auto a Flexplate.

My understanding is that there is only one part number
for a 304/360 crank and I assumed that the balance
would be the same for them, though I guess the
rotating mass is different due to the pistons. I had
always heard that the part numbers are also the same
for the 304/360 flexplates and flywheels... is that
incorrect?

Thanks,

Jesse

A: SOme people with Jeeps have used the 304 and 360
flexplates
interchangeably (I always found vibration) The 304 has

slightly less offset
weight than the 360. I went through this with my '73
J4000 when I swapped a
304 for the dead 360. WHich trans are you running? The

universal with
adapter ring? New flexplates are still available (I
still have my old one
from the '73. I was going to cut the weighted portion
from it to find out
how much the 360 needed but never got around to it.
The teeth were nearly
chewed off in one spot)

Ok, I've overhauled the brakes, washed the car and
generally gotten it ready for summer. One thing I've
been putting off for about 10 years is the cleanup of
the interior. And that means redoing the driver's seat
where it's split and disintegrating.

Any listers know of a good place that sells NOS or
other upholstery? My upholstery shop only has books
for the Big 3 and Studebaker (what's with that?!?) so
no luck there unless I want to cut a swatch out and
send it away. No thrilled about making it worse.

Car is a '65 Ambassador, color is a dark bluish with a
hint of green, of course it's textured. Need about a
yard or so.

Thanks!

                -Andy

I saw Steve just a little while ago at the Lake County fairgrounds AACA car show. Jock and I were there and I brought my 70 AMC road racer out of retirement and was some of my new interest, antique oil cans. Steve came up to me and recognized my car from a show he and I were both at at Zinn's Diner in PA. I think it may have been his first show of his beautiful AMX convertible. I moved to northern IL last fall and it felt really good to have someone say hi who remembered me from the old car show days on the east coast. We had a good chat and he explained how he had been driving his convertible AMX all over the country. He inspired me to consider bringing my AMX out to the street and begin enjoying it more than just shows. I will miss him.

Andy,
Contact SMS Auto Interiors (may not have the name
right, but do a google search) in Oregon or Original
Auto Interiors in Columbus, Michigan. Both companies
have purchased the NOS overstock lots from the major
manufacturers.

For SMS, at least, have your trim code from the door
tag of your car ready when you call. Tell them how
much of the seat will need to be recovered and they
can advise you if they have the material and how much
it will take. They know their stuff.

Good luck,

Thanks to all of your readers that tried to help with my parts request.
I got one reply from Russ Hathaway who has the part, but I have been unable to contact him for the past week.
Russ, if you read this, please contact me again and send me a phone # where I can reach you.

Definitely incorrect that the numbers are the same. although some
aftermarket suppliers sell them as such (that's how I got the wrong one and
a vibe before, but I used a torch to lighten the flexplate a bit and the
vibe became almost non-existant)

AMC team,
I'm sure this has been asked before but as I am new I was wondering if
someone could go through the process of converting a 1971 AMC V8 Javelin
(360 4bbl) from points to an electronic ignition. I looked at a Mallary
Unilite system this weekend. It appears to tuck inside your distributor
cap and break a light beam which causes the ignition to fire. There are
also extra wires that come with it that have to be hooked up. I am going
for a somewhat stock look so my question is this: Did AMC or Jeep make
an electronic factory distributor in the mid-80's that will work on my
Javelin ? Please describe what's involved with the conversion and what
car is best to pirate the parts from. Also, if there are any modules,
relays, wiring harness, fuse panel issues to keep in mind. Thanks for
the help. At $89 to Unilite looks like a pretty good value. Goodbye
dwell ...

I did get my copy of the Muscle Car Enthusiast this weekend and the Dyno
article on the AMC 390 and the article on Guy Hasdall were both
excellent. I encourage you to go out and grab one soon.

I subscribe to AMO, NAMDRA, Hemmings Muscle Machines and MC Enthusiast.
All are enjoyable for different reasons. Does anyone know if Muscle Car
Review was back up and running ? That was my favorite but it bit the
dust about 4 years ago.

First thing that comes to my mind is a late-model Wagoneer HEI. Same motor, even.

" First thing that comes to my mind is a late-model Wagoneer HEI. Same motor, even.

afaik that's not hei [gm] but a ford duraspark; they started using it
about '78. they never used the high voltage coil or fat cap and
adapter, but if there's room they're just ford parts. this is the
essence of the 'tfi tuneup' you can see on jeep sites.

unlike hei, it has a control module separate from the dist, and no
versions have an integral coil. also unlike hei, it uses ballast
resistance in the coil circuit - at least until the late '80s tfi
coils, which amc never used. i'm not sure about them.

afaik any '78-later amc v8 will have it.

Thanks for the information guys. I would still like to hear from someone
who has experience with this changeover on a late model AMC and possibly
a "step by step" guide. If the switch over from the Eaton PS pump to the
Saginaw is a standard Javelin upgrade then I would think there is a
"standard" out there on this topic too.

Our Classic AMX web page has a link to this upgrade which is on a Jeep web
site. I'll post the links here:
http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/classicamx/index.htm about halfway down
the page is link to "ignition upgrade"... and it goes to :

http://www.trailhed.com/project1.html where you see the link to their
"Duraspark Distributor upgrade" All kinds of step by step instructions,
parts lists, downloads...
