They're needed for a transverse mounted V engine, where it's almost impossible to get at the back row of plugs.... As for multi-electrode plugs, they're not new, just re-discovered. A buddy of mine used to have an old Alfa that used them. If I recall correctly, they were needed to shelter the spark in a high turbulence head design. This is not an inexpensive venture so I will most likely be looking for orders prior to getting the tooling for the main canisters design. Right now I am just looking to see if there is a market out there for them. I would first start with 68-74 Javelin and AMXs. They will be all aluminum and offered in standard finish non-trans cooler, standard finish with trans cooler and also a polished version of each. The cooling capacity will be 30% better than a 4 core Blackstone radiator and much more than our stock 2 and 3 core factory units. They will be made specifically for AMCs and not some modified other brand that was made to fit. Inlet and outlet holes will be in the stock location so you can use your existing hoses. I might also have an optional overflow unit available. I haven't worked out all the costs yet but I am shooting for prices to start around the $250-300 mark which is about what it costs to have a copper radiator re-cored these days plus the will look great under the hood. I know a guy who just spent $2000 having one custom built and installed in his 74 AMX. Now he also had other things to work around because of having a 871 BDS blower on his engine but still, that is a lot of money. In those engines it may have something to do with the propensity for lead fouling. Lead is still used in avgas and when one of the electrode gaps gets impaired by lead salts, one or more of the others can continue to develop spark. Yes I know only one spark can be generated at any give firing impulse. Also, light aircraft engines typically have dual ignition systems for reliability (like the old Nashes) but the dual spark event definitely develops more power from the engine. Perhaps the next thing we'll see in cars, is a return to dual ignition along with multiple intake and exhaust valves we're seeing now. Fine wire plugs are also used as an option in aviation. These are generally platinum coated. It's not well indexed from the top level, here's th elink to the suspension page: http://wps.com/AMC/Front-suspension/index.html A one-piece upper A-arm is probably more rigid than the early suspensions, if you're subjecting it to severe stresses, like professional road racing, but that's just a guess; and if you're doing that, chassis stiffness and other issues will appear at the same time. People who slag this suspension as generally "no good" simply don't know what they are talking about. It's a fine design, if a bit old-fashioned, 40+ years later. It's got a lot of fail-safe subtleties in it as do more modern cars; it just has too many parts (read: labor costs) for modern tastes. ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Mon, 22 May 2006 15:41:26 -0400 From: Wayne E LaMothe <superglider@xxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] Marlin site To: amc-list@xxxxxxx Message-ID: <20060522.154126.1796.0.superglider@xxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I know the Marlin website went down a while ago. It's a fine design, if a bit old-fashioned, 40+ years later. It's got a lot of fail-safe subtleties in it as do more modern cars; it just has too many parts (read: labor costs) for modern tastes. " Just to clarify, that's mainly to many parts/labor costs for PRODUCTION. The upper assembly on the old cars consists of two arms with bushings, the trunnion itself, trunnion bushings which screw onto the trunnion and into the arms, large o-rings that serve as seals for the trunnion bushings, a thrust bearing, spring seat tower, bolt to hold the arms together, a bumper mount/spacer that goes on that bolt and between the arms, and the rubber bumper (that limits downward suspension travel). Then this all has to be assembled into one unit. It's not that hard, but takes time. For production that can be costly. Repair costs go up when someone unfamiliar with the design has to study it and take the time to figure it out as they go. In contrast, the single arm design has one large A-arm (dies cost more, but once made part doesn't cost much more than the two arms) with two bushings, the ball joint, and a pivoting spring seat. Costs less to manufacture, and less to install. It's a bit easier to repair, but not really cheaper assuming you're replacing the ball joints, bushings, and spring seat pivot. The trunnion is pretty simple and easy but takes a little more time. With the later design taking the pivoting spring seat apart and reassembling with a new bushing takes more time than replacing the trunnion with all those parts -- at least most of the time. It depends on how badly worn the pivot is. Production costs drives more changes to cars than real improvements. Theoretically efficiencies in production should improve quality due mainly to fewer possible mistakes, but that's a fallacy in the real world. Take McPherson struts, for instance. There is no control over camber changes at all, and the wheel changes camber as it moves up and down in a shallow arc, but not much. It's cheaper to produce as a unit and install the same way though (a true McPherson strut with integral shock/spring/spindle, not the many modifications such as the Mustand and Camaro, and some Japanese cars that simply replace the spring and shock with a strut, but are multi link suspensions). The old Rambler suspension is better in terms of handling and ride once the spring rates are tuned to modern conditions. Camber changes occur, but in a controlled manner, and the suspension can be adjusted much more, though caster is limited in the 50-61 big car design (-63 small cars), a bit less limited in the 63-69 design when adjustable strut rods are used. ------------------------------ Message: 12 Date: Mon, 22 May 2006 22:32:05 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] AMC movie spotting To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F6B2F53E1611E282D02489AC9B0@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Watching a long and mixed feelings movie (from depression to laughter about the dark humour) called "Trees Lounge and I see several AMCs, including a dead ringer for the '77 AMX I used to have! _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
