Hi guys,

I have at least eight brand new spring isolator rubbers that I think I had gotten for either my 70 AMX or some of my previously owned eagles. I am willing to sell them if I can isolate which car they are for so I don't misrepresent them. Is $20 per pair fair? Let me know how I can identify them and if anyone needs them, I won't.

Kim,

Yeah, show paint ain't cheap. From the sound of it, they don't
really want your job, but if you're willing to pay their price
they'll do it. Restoration shops do worry about their reputation.
If they do "cheap" jobs, word gets around that their work is crap.
I had my Javelin done at a shop run by a friend. Before that, one
of his first jobs after he opened the shop was my daily beater
Chevy pickup. He did a good job, but he didn't want me to tell
people who did the work because it involved a lot of bondo.

As for your Gremlin, I love 30 year old cars with original paint.
You say ther's no rust, just a few dings. If they're not that big,
I would be inclined to detail the existing paint and ignore the
dings. There are shops in this end of the province that advertise
paintless dent repair. There must be some in the GTO. A cheap
respray wouldn't hold up over time like the original paint, so you
would end up having to strip the car and paying big bucks anyway.

Just my .02 worth.

Couple of things on this. First, the head bolts are not common hardware
store fare. The 199 and 232 sixes (at least the first style with shaft
rockers) do not have dowels to locate the heads so the bolts have machined
shoulders to locate the head properly. Also, these are not grade 8 bolts,
they are grade 5. Second, this fix may not do a thing, particularly for a
40 plus year old motor. How's the oil pressure when hot (if you can drive
it, it's best to drive it for 10 to 15 minutes to get it good and hot)? If
the light flickers at all at idle, at least the cam bearings are shot and
the mains may be as well (on the 232 in my 68 American, this was caused by
broken up valve stem seals plugging up the oil pickup tube, I put a new
pump and tube in it, had the crank machined and once it was running, it
flushed more seal material out and did the same damage all over again). If
it doesn't flicker and cleaning the oil passage didn't help, you probably
have a spun cam bearing. Third, you need a new or rebuilt rocker shaft
assembly (Kanter has good prices on rebuilt shaft assemblies). The really
don't last long with no oil. You should also check the valves for excessive
play in the guides (I could easily see them move in my engine). If it turns
out that you have engine damage, it seems like it usually runs between
$1500 and $2000 to rebuild them depending upon what's wrong and if you do
any assembly yourself. Also, pistons and water pumps are different for
64-67 engines (pistons are about twice as much for those three years). I
sourced both of those items from Kanter.

As far as machining the head bolt goes, I wouldn't do it by hand. The
machined area needs to be concentric (btw, if you do this yourself, you
want to clamp on the neck and not the head, they head may not be concentric
and cause a wobble) and if you go deeper than the root diameter of the
threads, you'll weaken the bolt. Also, you need to radius the step you just
made in the bolt so it doesn't get a stress fracture and snap. This is a no
big deal machining operation on a lathe. It took all of about 10 minutes to
do. You may have to pay a machine shop an hour labor to do it but it's a
lot better to pay them than having to remove the head to fish out a broken
bolt.

It sounds to me like the oil filter collapsed or the head bolt the oil
passes through (on tube style) is clogged up.

I got a chance to look at the 65 American hardtop. I like the body style,
and the floors looked solid from underneath.

But there is serious rust around the top of the rear window, from the inside
it seems, as the rearmost roof support channel is rusted through , and light
peaks in from above the window (no headliner), but the rest of the car looks
good. Plus there is thick cancer in small spots in the front roof corners
too, about 3" in from the edges. Also one cancer spot on the DS rear
quarter before the wheel well, but the wheel lips and rear quarters look
solid. This has rust in strange places, and none in the usual places.

What causes the roof to rust like that? Is is common? Anybody got a roof
for a 65 hardtop? Or the top of the rear window? I know they're all
different. I can weld.

Also: Rear air shocks and big shackles! Forgot to check the mounting points
but it felt very solid when I rocked it.

Window cranks suspect.
And the back seat is missing. These are all the same, right?

Carb looks freshly rebuilt but flex plate went away which is how it ended up
at the tow company.

Exhaust empties before the axle, intentionally, is that an air shock thing?
It seems like somebody built it up for abuse, and then abused it, and
abandoned it.

They want 600 plus towing. So, talk me into it or talk me out of it.

Thanks,
Mike Kindle

It was perfectly clear from the start that he didn't want your paint
job. I would not have wasted my time after he started nit picking and
making false statements and especially after the insanely high price
quote. A quality paint job goes for around 5,000$ plus body work. I
agree with Ross about the quality of original paint. My orange Hornet
has original paint. It was never touched up and has a few small dings
and some damage to the drivers door. I had the car professionally
polished out. It took about 8 hours work over a 4 day period at my
friends shop and cost me 220$. I looks beautiful now. I used Sherman
Williams acrylic enamel to repaint the metal quarter window frames and
it matched almost perfect. I have an nice un-damaged orange door I will
have installed and polished out to replace the damaged one. Original AMC
paint was real good. You'd be amazed what a professional detailer can do
with good old paint. I need one of those painless dent removers to take
a small dent out of the hatch near the lock.

Last week I had the stainless trim I polished out that goes between the
tail lights installed along with 2 of my restored Hornet emblems and the
door popper I had installed in the hatch to save my fingers repaired.
This all took about an hour. Yesterday I took the car back to have the
other Hornet emblem and the Plastic stick on AMC emblem installed along
with my new hatch guide pin. That was another half hour. When I asked
what I owed I was told don't worry about it. Next week I will have my
grill ready to paint and he said I could paint it in the corner of his
shop. The car was there for 11 months last year while I did the interior
and he did some mechanical repairs. He only charged me for the repairs
he did. I gave him 100$ a month and called it storage while I did the
interior. He never asked for it but it was only fair. Now that's a nice
guy.
