Clean body which needs paint. An early 232 has been transplanted into the car by a previous owner. At first I thought it was one of the scarce 232 4-doors which were made by AMC along with the Rambler Typhoons, but the homemade engine mounts give the transplant away. The car started fine two days ago. It had a slight lifter tick which went away as it warmed up. All I did to get it running was replace the burned points and condenser. The car was horribly out of time too. The distributor wasn't loose, but it did sit in the front yard of the junkyard several weeks so someone could have tampered with it. Yesterday, when I started it after replacing the worn shifter column with another used column, there was a pronounced lifter tick which didn't go away as the engine warmed and there was a brief loud metallic sound like something loose in the oil pan. Maybe I should have shut it down then, but the sound was only brief. Tonight I'll pull the valve cover and inspect the rocker shaft and push rods. I'll also do a cold compression test before I start the engine, looking for clues. I'll drain and strain the oil. Any other suggestions? It tracks nice and straight this way and corners well. What I do with these old Bias ply original equipment cars is take the caster up as far as it will go and match it side to side to the one that comes out the least towards positive. As in if one side comes out 4 and one 6, I go 4 on the pair. It makes the steering a little heavy coming off center, but that is usually not a problem with the old overboosted 60's P/S systems. You can get a caster camber gauge for about $40 and do it yourself with a little time and patience. Just be careful and read up on the basics. What damage would 40 year old wool do? Best of all, it is free for the taking. Clean title. Next to it is a 1963 Pontiac Catalina 2-dr hdtp with 54K, it looks real nice too. Basic V8-AT-PS-PB (single resevoir, those pikers) and 4V. Anyone interested in an old indian before I advertise. $3K and contact me off list or at 503-589-9845. I came across a 1982 Eagle wgn at a boneyard this morn, fully equied including cruise, tilt, power door locks, 4speaker stereo, PS, PB, AC, and real straight. Anyone need anything? There is still stuff left off that 77 AMX. I am going to finish parting it out on Thurs.......Russ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! You can send every late-'60s AMC convertible home for a full resto. Despite what it cost AMC to try to succeed by moving upsize and up-market (if one only reads AMC history by Pat Foster, one might believe that tooling the "big" cars --- the convertibles and the '67 Marlin --- along with the '74 Matador coupe (plus the '75 Pacer) was all that doomed AMC to death [he's loath to admit that AMC could've died on a Gremlin-Hornet-Eagle diet also...], but, nonetheless, few ragtops by any maker ever stacked their fabric so well. http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/9783/13ra.jpg If it were a Chevy or a Pontiac, it could be a $100k car someday. As an AMC, it should be even more valuable. As reality, no one really knows. Proof? It's a laugh-out-loud post. http://www.apgrd.ox.ac.uk/events/images/goldhill.jpg May 1, 1926 was indeed the day that Ajax magically became Nash and it was more than just another swap-n-sell Ring on the AMC family tree, but since one of my Rhine maidens had wrist surgery and is not yet back at work, I'm drowning in "to-do" today, so must type it in another post --- IF this one lists correctly. If, like a boat with an untended leak, it lists -again-, I'll just let it sink. You can dredge for it from a Pacer someday and spear it with a Karmann Jav.
