The welds broke because they tried welding high grade steel studs to a cast iron hub. I bet the weld stuck really good to the stud but broke off the hub. Cast iron is extremely difficult to weld without the proper know-how and equipment. I mean a weld that lasts, of course!

Thanks to Tom J and George Graham for your replies.
(First, I'm not reusing the off-center drums, but some different ones, I
must have mistyped.)
Second, you've confirmed the sinking suspicions I developed while looking
closely at everything last night. I think the factory swedging is what
allowed them initially to use smooth wheel studs, the swedge punch holding
the drum on and keeping the stud from turning. The first replacement would
be knurled, which will cut slots in the hub holes. I think I will source
some new knurled studs and let the drums live unswedged. I have some other
used hubs that have the studs welded on the back to keep them from turning
and the welds pop right off due, I beleive, to someone trying to weld
dissimilar metals, so I want to avoid that, despite having the new welder. .

I have 1969 AMX 390 go pak car-auto loaded with options +a/c, looking to
trade for a real sc/rambler-solid mostly original car, will trade up or
down. I have a 15 month old and another child on the way, so I need a back
seat to tote the crew going to car shows. Car is hunter green with charcoal
int. A true survivor-garage kept-80,000 miles. The car is not for sale,
unless I purchase another car first.

I would change the nose bushing in that starter or overhaul one that hasn't
been molested. (They dump the pieces into bins and mismatched parts are put
together causing trouble)

No big deal, but I drove up to San Francisco, from Los Angeles
this past
weekend, for the Maker's Faire (http://www.makezine.com/faire/)
in the
'70 Hornet. 70-75mph the whole way, ran great, grilled a lot of
bugs.
(Actual insects, not problems.)
My starter is crapping out; it's a "premium" rebuild from NAPA.
I guess
the word premium means crap, because that's what it is; it gets
tighter
when hot, and it always sounds tight. This was premium #2, as #1
had one
of those crap stripped-stud-fixing things on it, that came off
in the
box! (Rather than actually replace the stripped stud on the
core, they
wrench on a "repair stud" on it; so much for quality.). Even the
NAPA
counter guy was embarrassed, and got me the replacement, no
questions
asked.
I'm gonna take the one from the parts car to the local rebuilder
-- who
I can at least hold responsible for his work! -- install that,
and
repeat with the current one so I have two good starters, one for
mine
and the other for Josh's 72 Hornet, which I hope to complete
this
weekend.
Picked up the torque converter today on the way to work, so I
have run
out of excuses for reassembling that car.
