Me I am a person that cannot leave anything alone. I am always looking
for ways to improve everything not only my cars. My latest 74 Hornet
Hatchback project is my latest custom effort. It came with Western
Turbine style wheels and I detailed them with the same orange paint the
car is painted with between the ribs. For the knock off's I made from
scratch a copy of the AMC emblem on the panel below the hatch. I added
BFG T/A Radials. The car will get a complete set of 77AMX flairs and
rear window louver painted to match the car. The interior has all custom
modified and custom machined billet knobs on the dash and on the stock
window roller handles and on the stock column gear shift lever done by
me. The door panels are button and tufted black vinal done by me and
also I did all the panels in the hatch area the same. I also made a
diamond tufted panel for inside the hatch. I also added a door popper
for the hatch to save my fingers. The bench seat was replaced with 2
Javelin buckets that were similar to the stock Hornet buckets. The dash
has an Auto Meter tac in place of the stock clock. Since the emblem on
the glove box was missing I made my own using rub on model letters and
plastic and an AMC decal from my model parts. The car has no radio and
has a stock radio delete panel with a metal early Hornet front fender
emblem attached to the center of it using double stick tape. Under the
stock package tray is a factory gauge pod of unknown year with 3 Auto
Meter gauges mounted in a custom panel and a battery cut off switch. The
seats are upholstered with the stock 74 Hornet insert material with the
rest of them done in black vinal. The side windows are tinted the very
lightest smoke they make and it subtly sets off the orange paint. The
windshield will be tinted 6 inches down from the top with the light tint
and with a darker smoke tint lettering spelling out American Motors. I
still have to repaint the stock double black pin stripe on both sides of
the car as idiots polishing the car in the past have worn it off in
spots. Now this is a custom even you purest's would probably like. It's
98% stock AMC parts from different years. The engine has an Acell Super
Coil with a stock points dist. The stock carb has a manual choke and
when the tranny gets rebuilt it will have a B&M Trans Pack set on firm
and an aux. tranny cooler. I also replaced that horrible 35 amp Motorola
alt. with a 100 amp Delco and added a front sway bar. I replaced the
rear springs with ESPO HD ones with new poly bushing's and shackles. The
car got the usual mechanical's repaired, brakes, front end, water pump,
fuel pump, dist. tune up, hosed belts, wires and a new heater core and
fluid changes along with a new gas tank, sender all rubber fuel and
brake lines, the A/C recharged and a new radiator and much more. A lot
of work and money for a 500$ car in just 2 1/2 years. Good thing it ws a
99% rust free Florida car with almost mint original paint.

At the moment, 762 members.

When the old list was poured into the new mailing list server, there
were just over 1400. THe now-gone 700 were mostly dead email addresses
the previous software didn't (know how to) remove, and some number (I
guess about 100 - 200) were technically valid but the previous software
had NEVER sent them email; so when the got mail from the new server they
screamed SPAM! Also about 100 or more simply didn't recognize the email
from the new server as "AMC LIST" because it simply looked different.

As long as I had a place to take it completely apart (plan on it taking up
about 4 times it's assembled space for parts and work room), I'd be willing
to tackle it. It looks to me like it needs some front floor work, quarter
panels, trunk drop offs, and repair around the windshield and rear window
(this will require fabrication of patch panels, you'll need a
shrinker/stretcher tool to get the curves correct). I would start by media
blasting it since it has a ton of surface rust from sitting in primer and
seeing what you have to work with. Once it's blasted, you need to have the
entire car epoxy primed and then keep it in a dry area or it will turn into
a rusty pile very quickly. You'll also need some way to touch up the primer
as you work on the car since you can't weld through epoxy primer. Do not
leave the car in primer from an aerosol can or any other non-epoxy primer.
This stuff absorbs water like a sponge. Regular body filler does as well
(fiberglass based doesn't but it's more expensive and harder to work with).

What's not obvious from the pictures is how structurally sound it is. Are
the frame sills (front and rear) solid and straight? What are the inner
rockers like? What are the crossmembers under the floor like? How about the
inner fenders in the front? This is no doubt a big project but if you're
willing to spend the money on decent tools and learn to do it yourself, I'm
sure you could handle it (unless you're very impatient then don't bother).

Matt

What goes bad on these in Americans: the L-shaped copper finger that goes up
and down touching the the coil of resistance wire inside the unit falls off
the metal arm to which it should be attached. You get an empty tank
reading. If you pry back the three tabs to open up the sender to reveal the
wire coil, you will usually see a seperate L-shaped copper finger kicking
around. I drilled the metal arm and copper finger with the tiniest drillbit
and carefully riveted them back together with the tiniest copper rivit. No
pop rivet is small enough, but I lucked out at a surplus aircraft hardware
store and found some really small solid ones. One could probably make a
rivit out of solid copper wire, annealed(softened) by heating to red on your
gas stove, and then hammered with the smallest hammer. A check on my repair
with an ohm-meter showed that resistance varies with movement so I think I
got it right.

New replacements run near 90 bucks from the vendors.

I tried to repair one once years ago with solder and had the joy of watching
the gage sink down to zero one day as the arm fell off again. We'll see how
the rivit does.

Sheesh, enough with the list already :-)

Our '72 Hornet's engine went dud a month back, and I pulled the 258 from
my parts car and had it rebuilt at a local rebuilders, and it's been
dangling from a chain for three weeks now waiting for me to finish the
job.

I've been really busy, but I am doing it in stages. Got the trans out
last weekend; took 2 hours. THe motor was very tired when I got the car
from Ron; it burns oil, leaks oil, had a lot of lifter noise, and the
chronic lack of oil to the top end, which is what finally did it in;
#1's rockers weren't, so I assume bent pushrod. Noisy as hell!

Tomorrow or Sat. I'll pull the motor, and get the new one in place. I
have to get a new torque converter for the A904 so trans won't go in til
the following weekend.

I have two brand new sets of ceramic coated Hooker
Headers for 67-69 square port heads. These were a
special order part for a customer who decided he
wanted a dogleg head for his engine build. Price is
$550 a set + shipping. I only have two sets at that
price. Once they are gone, they are gone. Contact me
off list if you are interested. I accept all major
credits cards, money orders or certified checks.
Personal checks must clear both banks before I will
ship. I do not accept Paypal on items that exceed
$500.00. Receive a free AMC T-shirt with this item.

That is a question that is difficult to answer. Restore or restify?
There is a difference. One takes a lot of time and money; the other can
take a lot of time and money. Also are you gonna do it or are you gonna
have it done.
I think that I have the capability to do it, but I do not think that I
would want to spend my time spinning wheels with the potential of a lot
of rust. Remember, when you have a rusty car you have to be careful of
the rust you can not see.
If you are gonna do it yourself do you have the knowledge, tools and the
place to work on it not to mention the budget required. If you are
planning to have it done do you have the pockets that are deep enough?
If I were to start that project the very first thing that I would try to
locate is a rust free rolling chassis some where in the south west and
have it shipped to me. I would try to insure that it was as complete as
possible.
For me, I think that I would pass. Been there done that and a hump
fender Javelin does not fascinate me enough to go there again.
John.
