You all may have seen in the news how major tornados ripped the Midwest April 2nd. One came within 200 yards of my house in Caruthersville, Mo. Some 60% of my town of 6,700 was wiped out or significantly damaged. We had a broken window, broken siding from baseball sized hail, some displaced shingles and vehicle dents. My garage housed my '69 AMX and '57 Chevy 4-door hardtop. Both cars made it unscathed, and I only saw a dent or two on the shed. Meanwhile, about a half mile away a '63 Studebaker Avanti was being stored in an old service station. It is owned by the local GM dealer. My nephew is service manager there and said the Avanti was pretty messed up when he pulled it out of the rubble. The fiberglass welds in the top had broken loose, and much other damage occurred. A couple of blocks away, another garage blew away. Inside was a mid-'50s Studebaker pickup which had been stored there since I was in high school in the '70s. The shed is gone, but the truck was ! still in place. However, it has a broken windshield and various dents. But I'd say it's salvagable. Another car buddy in town last fall bought a '39 Ford street rod. It was pristine, like all his past cars. His house was destroyed, and as of Friday Bill still couldn't get his car out of the garage. He is sure that at best it is scratched up, but at least it appears to be in one piece. I told my wife that the inside of my garage looked like a tornado hit it. Of course, it looked that way before last Sunday!
