I have never removed a tailshaft while the tranny was
still in the car.  I have tilted one (while pulling
the engine/tranny combo) without draining it and
experienced the flood however.

I would think that if you don't tilt the tranny too
much you will only have minimal fluid to catch.  Most
of the oil will remain in the tranny pan.
