Smarter than this are the mirrors on my 96 Ram -- if you hit something like 
a tree limb, they just fold out of the way. This has saved my a couple of 
mirrors for sure.

A quicker way to remove a non-fold away mirror is just to clip something 
like a chain link fence gate latch. This method worked really well on the 
cheesy plastic mirror that was on my 68 American when I got it. Of course, 
I wasn't actually trying to remove the mirror...
