Andrew, it's not hard to change retainers as I described in a previous post. As long as the retainer holds the bearing in and fits the input shaft anyway. I had a T-96J (the HD version only use by AMC) which has a slightly larger diameter input shaft. The SR-4 retainer may not have worked on a standard T-96. The point is a top loader can be used with a smaller retainer.
