You wouldn't have much trouble finding a good 4.0L, 2WD trans, and all
required MPFI stuff for half of what you're planning on spending. A 4.0L
will run 150-200K easily. You may even find an entire 87-early 90s 2WD
Cherokee for that amount that just needs a little mechanical freshening,
not a complete rebuild.

Which brings me back to a 2WD Cherokee. A used one in good enough
condition can be a driver now, a donor later.
