" > Everyone seems high on the 4.0 in line six, what year and model would be " the " > best for my Gremlin if I have to change the engine and transmission? generally a '91-8 wrangler or grand cherokee are considered easiest. they have a centered 'normal' fan which the cherokee/comanche doesn't, and these years have the best head. sticks are rare on the gc. the first year or two had an aisin-warner aw4 auto, which doesn't have a lot of torque multiplication but is very efficient. after that they went to a tf 42re, an electronic 4sp mopar auto with great torque multiplication. auto on the wrangler is also mopar, a tf999/32rh/32re. i believe it went electronic with the obdII ecm, in '96. stick with either, if you can find one, is an aisin-warner ax15, a box with a very good rep. bad for a light car, it has trucklike ratios, and you'd have to get one from a 2wd cherokee. if you can find a late-'80s/early-'90s turbo supra r154 box, it's a sibling with much better gears. the pilot bushing and clutch spline are different but can be handled, and it fits the ax15 bell. probably most satisfactory would be an advance adapters custom bell and ford svt t5, a great shifting box. move the shifter forward with a gm s-10 extension case, replace 5th with a bw aftermkt 0.8, and add the 5speeds.com cluster stabilizer.
