Man it's been a long time since I did this so I do not recall the  
details.

However, the inner driveshaft is splined on both ends; the far (rear)  
end has a coupler (the v8's had some sort of balancer/coupler but  
I've never seen one). The thing is, there's a sealed bearing in the  
middle, which is probably what's shifted and sticking in the housing.  
I don't recall what the TSM says (and I'm too lazy to walk outside to  
the lab to look :-) but -- for information purposes -- to disassemble  
the drive shaft you unbolt the housing both ends, and the driveshaft  
"should" fall out one end or the other. The center bearing sits in a  
flange or reduced ID in the tube. In practice, I've never taken one  
all the way out, but I did have it slide inconveniently part way out.

Now what the hell was my point... oh yeah, just bang the damned  
driveshaft back inna hole. It's not too subtle. Align the front U- 
joint, clean rag on a 2x4 stub, whack 2x4 with 4lb hammer. Well place  
it on the end of the driveshaft first.

If the driveshaft came forward enough to come off the rear spline,  
you'd know it. First, it probably means it is sticking out 4", not  
just 1". Second, the shaft would not be aligned in the tube at all,  
it'd pivot on that center bearing.

It could also be that you don't have the torquetube ass'y  
horizontally or vertically aligned. That probably wouldn't account  
for a whole inch though.

I also don't recall the actual detail of where the trans flange meets  
the torque tube flange and what the relationship of that rubber seal  
and it's retainer are.

Last, was that metric or english swearing? Might make a difference,  
who knows.
