This is why I have a full set of TSMs! 1971 was the last use of vacuum wipers by AMC. They were only used in Hornet and Gremlin.
1971 TSM - "The 01 and 40 Series vacuum or electric wipers..."
"The 70 Series wiper control is operated by a three speed horizontally mounted toggle switch.
The 10 and 80 Series electric wiper is operated by a three speed vertically mounted toggle type switch."
1972 TSM - "Two-speed electric windshield wipers and electric washers are standard equipment on all Series. Optional equipment includes a variable-speed windshield wiper system for 01 and 40 Series and a three-speed windshield wiper system for the 10-70 and 80 Series."
1973 states only two speed wipers with intermittent wipers optional for some Series (doesn't state which, but I bet N/A on > Hornet/Gremlin).
1974 states two speed optional, intermittent on all except 70 Series. I would expect there were no intermittents available on 73 Javelin (70 Series) either. Probably due to the unique Javelin switch and > location.
Two speed stock, intermittent optional was the norm from 1975-83. Looks like they were trying to get rid of the old variable speed systems in 72 as well as use up stock of vacuum motors in 71. Of course both are just a guess!
Just for kicks: the first use of electrics was as an option on ALL Series in 1964. It was the variable speed Prestolite system. This system was optional on all models through 1970, with vacuum standard across the board through 1970.

Tom and all, The 70 Hornet I bought new in November of 1969 also came with vacuum wipers but I solved that problem by installing the electric wipers from my wrecked 69 SC/Rambler with a little trickery.
Wow. Well a sample of 3 isn't exactly exhaustive, but it sure seems like AMC was palming off vacuum wipers on it's new low end car. probably had a barn full of the damned things to get rid of!
