The 78 GT could be ordered with a four speed for sure, I think that was the first year of the SR-4. Might have been 77 though. Ah-ha!! http://www.gremlinx.com/AMC-Transmissions.htm has the answer: 76-81 SR-4 for small cars!! Plan on rebuilding an SR-4 with 80-100K miles on it. Synchros are usually shot, nothing major. If you really want the boxy style, you can extend your search to Spirit sedans (Gremlin with Spirit front end and a large rear side window). If the small car is what you want, consider Spirits also. But there were enough Gremlins built (even AMC people forget how successful the little car really was) that there should still be enough to go around. Check the website listed above, and check ep.com (link from www.amxfiles.com). You might have to go a little further to get the right car, but you should be able to find someone here that would be able to inspect a car for you. then fly out and drive it home! I don't think any Gremlins came with 4 speeds, however I could be mistaken about the '78's.
