Externally, a T-96 is a T-96 -- at least as far as the main case is concerned. Different input shaft length/splines/pilot end are possible, and different output shaft length/spline and corresponding housing are possible. Internally, gear ratios varied a bit, but AFAIK not by much. You can't spread three gears but so far (which is why we've hit up to eight...). Only AMC used the "heavy duty" J model, and was the last to use a T-96 in the early 70s -- I think through 72.
