Hi Ian, I can shed some light on question #2. The 196 did have an aluminum version that came with the early Classic(61-63?). Only the block was aluminum though. Mostly the were cast iron and were produced from the mid-fifties to '65. The 196 and the later sixes are different animals. The heads will not interchange. If you want to build a frankenstein six, the later ones would work best. From what I understand, it's not that difficult to get 300hp plus! There was actually an Indy car that did some runs with 2 199's mated and was surprisingly fast!
