Basically, it's to protect the list members from the rash of virus' that 
were spread on the previous list server. There's also the issue that if you 
give someone the ability to use a yellow background and hot pink colored 
(or light purple) letters, they will do it. Aesthetics aside, it's hard to 
beat black letters on a white background for readability (also, if there 
are any list members that us screen readers, they work better with plain 
text than with HTML). Finally, those of us with dial up don't have to worry 
about downloading multi-megabyte pictures of someone's freshly painted 
hubcaps, or certain other list member's AMC thongs.
