I had this problem with my 68 American. It turned out to be the intake 
manifold bolts had worked loose (one of them actually fell out). A new 
gasket and hardware took car of the problem. It idles wonderfully now.

You may want to consider taking an auto body class at a local community 
college. I did that and it was the best $150 I ever spent.
