Before hooking up a battery, just remember that there are no fusible links
in the main wiring. You may want to try a 6 volt battery just to make sure
there are no shorts before giving it a full 12 volts.

Doesn't sound like there's much to lose if something shorts. I seriously
doubt anything would catch fire -- insulation might melt off a wire but
fuses or circuit breakers would blow first, and you can cut power quick
enough. You can always unplug the steering column and radio before
powering up since you want to try saving those, just to be safe.
