It's been a lonmg time since I did this Jay! As I recall I did change spindles, but only be cause I didn't know at the time. As long as the bearing sets are the same you don't have to change spindles. I've only seen two spindles: one for drum and one for disc brakes. Some of the big cars w/big Bendix or KH discs may use a different spindle as the bearing set is a different number than the others. The difference, however, may be in the rotor and not the spindle.
Short answer: drum to drum spindle should be the same.
