Coil Spring Clamps

I would like to lower the front end on our Javelin 1" or so without cutting
the coil springs. Has anyone used those screw clamp deals that clamp a
couple of coils together from Autozone, etc? Do they work ok and are they
reliable? Or, is this a really poor solution to doing it right?
