A: Wow! THat sounds like horrid economy! Do you have lots of steep hills? I
tow various sized vehicles (from a Fiat 850 to a 1/2 loaded E350 Super Duty
diesel cube van and the replacement 7.3L motor/trans in my truck) but
average 14 around town and 18 mpg on the highway (when I can get the tired
old TH400 to stay in drive at high speed) That's with a 77 2 bbl 304, early
TH400, QT tcase with 2wd part time kit and 16% O/D, 3.73 axles (D44 front
and D60 rear) with 33" tires. Seattle area isn't flat but the hill to and
from my house is what I deal with mostly. I tend to cruise at 60 (tow dolly
is tagged for 45 but I only go that slow in the rain)

Jim,
I have a 2500 Dodge standard cab 4 wheel drive diesel powered PU truck.
I bought this vehicle to plow snow and to tow cars around the country. =
The vehicle has
plenty of power and performs these tasks with ease.
The vehicle has the Cummings diesel with 410 posi rear axle =
configuration I get ~20
miles per gallon around town and almost 15 one the highway while towing.
I am very happy that I bought the diesel as most of the 40,000+ miles I =
have put on the truck have
been towing a trailer with a car loaded aboard.
If I had purchased a gas version, similar to the one my neighbor bought, =
I would be getting ~8 miles
per gallon towing. My neighbor also bought his truck to tow cars and I =
spoke with him about gas mileage prior to
buying the diesel. It cost an additional 5K to buy the diesel rather =
than gas, but I think I have already saved a
few bucks.
