I've had a 401 in my AMX for many years, but my uncle and I always seemed to tune the engine by
the 390 specs. The 390 calls for 0 degrees advance and the 401 about 5 degrees, right? Well last
summer I drove the AMX to Phoenix for the 2004 AMO National and still had a hot engine after
putting in a $375 "special" radiator. While in Phoenix I got the tip from someone to use the 401's
timing spec of 5 degrees, and on the way home going through a 115 degree desert the engine ran
around 190 degrees. So yes, if the 401 doesn't have enough advance, it'll stand a chance of
running warm to hot..

If it's not a cooling system problem (collapsing hose, spun water
pump impeller, etc), it could well be not enough spark advance.
