this seems more like it..I ordered a "Motormite part"  for a 68' and it was all wrong, I now ordered a chrysler part that looked similar in the parts book.  hope it fits, shold be in today.  I 've owned many GM's and this amc column doesn't feel like a chevy.  thanks again
