Both of my Americans have the same setup (the 67 has a 199 and was build in
Kenosha, the 68 a 232 and was built in Canada). FWIW, OEM's have a long
history of choosing quite over efficient when it comes to air inlet design.
Most designs are horrible. For example, GM was able to remove at least 25
hp from the LS1 equipped Camaro's and Firebird's just by messing with the
air inlet tube.

you might be onto something, it was a Vancouver BC car originally. No,
there are no other holes, it looks as though I could take it underwater.

sure it's not in the back toward the firewall? Sounds fishy, but might
just draw air through that gap. I've never seen one quite like it though.
Is this a Canadian assembled car? Could be that the Canadian models got a
different air cleaner assembly? Might be better for colder weather???

breather hose out the front going to the valve cover and thats it. I
came to the conclusion that the wee carb draws its air from the gap
between the housing lid and base..all of about 1/16". seems very
retrictive to me, she runs great but is sluggish. I'll try out the lift
filter but the hood is very close already to the top of the housing.

the top of the housing you'll have some cold weather starting issues --
hard starting and choke stays on longer -- but that's all. I increased
the size of the snorkel on an early American (63) and it made a world of
difference! I used a 4" diameter can and squashed it into an oval shape,
cut one end to fit the cnotour of the breather housing. When I cut the
larger hole in the housing I left tabs to river the can to. A little
paintable caulk and black paint later it looked factory! Much easier
breathing than the orignal 2" snorkel.

ramblers I6 totally restrictive? the 1/16" air gap seems weak. does it
make a difference to modify this slightly (like put in a talller element)
or fine as is? thanks
