steering linkage had almost worn through the oil pan ! It took a new set
of engine mounts to restore the clearance.
No kidding! My 1963, I measure mount wear by how close it is to
the steering linkage! Funny you should mention this; a few months
ago I noticed paint scuffed off the oilpan, even though there's
nearly 1/4" of clearance. The steering link moves in a slight arc,
closest to the pan at lock, close though it still doesn't hit; but
I think at lock, a pothole or bump compresses the mounts and taps
the pan. The sort of stuff you see in really old cars!
Also, the idler arm pushing pressed depth directly affects oilpan
clearance.
