Sounds like the gauge voltage regulator dropped dead. It supplies
an average of 5 volts or so to run the gauges. (It pulses on and
off about twice a second! looks crazy on a voltmeter)

Newer cars (1970, at least) have the regulator built into one of
the gauges (water, I think) you have to R & R the whole thing.
Older cars (1963 at least) it's a separate little dongle. You can
buy 'em from the AMC parts people.

I just checked mine (hornet) during checkout. I had a dash lamp on
a pair of clip leads. Flashed on and off. Working!
